professed to be political experts were shown to be well connected well informed perhaps but on the thing that ultimately decided the result how people were planning to vote not well educated They were left reporting opinions while Nate Silver and others reported research Election shows data illiteracy is a problem for journalists Knight Digital Media Center via amzam There s a lot being made this week of 1 Nate Silver s accuracy in predicting outcome of this election and b Journalists specifically on the major networks and cable news seeming inability to adapt to understand or translate in any sort of effective way this new data focused approach to political reporting And of course this is all 100 true But I think it misses the point The underlying assumption to all this is that any of these news organizations want this sort of data in the first place The reality is that any news channel or news program is now under the same profit driven pressure that any sitcom is without advertisers they have no money and they don t have advertisers without viewers and like any TV writer could tell you you don t get viewers without a compelling drama laced narrative in which the outcome is unknown until the final seconds The problem with someone like Nate Silver is that his work is completely counter to creating this sort of narrative While CNN and Fox and MSNBC were focused on the tight national polls and horse races and a razor tight electorate he was showing that it was state polls that mattered and specific states at that and they showed the race wasn t really all that close No news organization in 2012 is going to run with Obama is very likely to win on to other news when they can have 12 months of heated speculation and partisan hacks yelling over each other It s not about better reporting it s about better TV and all the data points to the very same approach in 2016 Nov 8 2012 543 notes politics journalism nate silver Nov 5 2012 2012 halloween meg
