phone messages are stored on automated voice mail servers or on the chips of digital answering machines Although audio cassette recording is still valid in some circles it is quickly being displaced by methods of digital recording on portable devices and computers While I suppose there s always the possibility of rescuing a hard drive or digital audio gadget and bleeding off the audio it s not nearly as easy or inviting as buying a tape or record at a thrift shop that has ball point scrawl identifying the contents as Dad s Birthday or Trudy Sings Okay it s a new era and with growing world of podcasting and audio blogs there may be more amateur recordings being made and distributed than ever before But they re being created with the reality or illusion that the audio can or could reach people around the world When somebody sent a steamy audio letter in 1984 or left an angry message on their boyfriend s answering machine in 1995 they never considered that their words and thoughts would be immortalized and a valued artifact of the human experience For the most part the era of the easily identifiable candid home audio artifact is over So were left to look for the scraps left behind and to cherish them If you re wondering why I continue to identify the recordings interchangeably as found or amateur or home recordings it s because they re really the same but some aren t from an anonymous source Some people actually have held onto the audio remnants and archives of their lives and one way or another these recordings have found their way into the hands of people already collecting found sound While there s not much mystery in the origination of recordings like this they still have the same raw texture and period dynamics of the old found recordings They can be just as much fun and will be included in the posts here as they were in my original radio show If I ve romanticized collecting and listening to home recordings as cosmic experience I should add a strong caveat The found sound business is a crap shoot Anybody who has sought these recordings has probably spent way too much time listening to hours of mumbling and droning conversations trying to figure out if there was any reason to ever hear that recording again It s not all sizzle and whimsey Putting together the Audio Kitchen radio program involved plenty of frustration and disappointment I can t tell you how many hundreds maybe thousands of hours were wasted trying to find the magic moments in found recordings or attempting to decide if there was one good reason to incorporate any particular segment into a tightly formated radio show After hours of trying to make sense of incessant mumbling kids screaming adults arguing or just an non stop stream of uneventful phone messages you at risk of wearing out your ears and numbing your brain

s the news Things may be a bit shaky around here for few weeks as I work out the bugs and get used to operating the equipment if you know what I mean If something doesn t work you see an awful typo or find some other odd problem please send me an email And I always appreciate any feedback offered to make this site better You may notice and I should admit that this site has a very similar sister blog The Radio Kitchen While I do wonder if it s a bit counter intuitive to start two blogs at the same time I bravely or unwittingly went ahead and decided to create two different web venues dedicated to a couple of my personal fascinations In my judgement the subject matter of each is little too divergent to occupy the same forum However they both elucidate at least two sides of my fascination with fringe media and lo fi audio But I like to focus and as a blogger I prefer to write about what interests me and not about myself I suspect that some may find something of interest in both blogs but I imagine that each one will find its own separate audience Maybe it doesn t look like much but the debut of these two blogs is the result of a long and somewhat trying ordeal of planning listening learning typing and configuring And it s not over yet But the time has come to quit fooling around and make it real And speaking of that let me close this inaugural post by thanking two new friends I made along the way to getting these projects off the ground I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Amy and Cam who offered me a helping

Answering Machine 8 58 download It all started at some social event Apparently in some small way she gave him some grief about not spending enough time helping her out with her kids or something like that And then he totally and completely yelled at her in front of a whole bunch of their friends Not a good idea in retrospect But it does engender some cogent dark comedy for the record I don t want to spoil the plot before you hear the tape but let s just say that she s so unflinchingly merciless that it s hard to imagine Kevin would ever take a call from her again And the end of this tape is sadly telling Perhaps there are people you can win over lovers by shoving them away but I m not so sure they re the ones you d want to stick around Cooler heads and nicer folks move on to more friendly and fertile territory And while it s good to be direct cruelty is problematic And isolating Although the last two furious females may have been lacking in clarity of mind flailed their men over the phone line they seemed sober enough For the next offering this clearly is not the case This tape is a murky affair One nice bonus is that it starts with an outgoing message from the owner of the machine It s the only time you hear his voice And is it my imagination or does everybody on this tape sound chubby and black The first caller is a horrendous mouth breather almost impossible to understand He calls the owner of the machine by name but I have no idea what that might be All I can glean from the message is that the caller is going to help him out sometime soon with something Then there s an invitation to come over and see the fight That s the first minute of the tape Then the fun begins Pussy s Answering Machine 5 28 download Apparently the guy is in some financial trouble and having trouble keeping up with some mortgage payments And again there was some type of a break up scene or argument providing the catalyst for this series of messages And the woman who can t stop calling does say If you need me I will help you in reference I assume to his financial woes Or at least she s willing to look out for his part of the end sic But not only were her feelings trampled in the recent skirmish but she seems to be at loss as to what is was all about He just doesn t like her She did something to him Or perhaps it has something to do with her drinking problem Okay maybe she doesn t usually drink herself into oblivion But as the salvos start coming in each message is sloppier and nastier than the last It occurs to me that she may have
