for keratoconus and the only treatment is at improvement of the refractive errors induced by the disease In more advanced cases of Keratoconus rigid contact lenses may be required to improve visual acuity however they can not stop disease progression Until recently the only therapeutic option for advanced cases with significant reduction of visual acuity was corneal transplantation penetrating keratoplasty In the past few years a new procedure has been developed that is supposed to stop the progression of keratoconus This procedure is called Corneal collagen Cross Linking CORNEAL collagen CROSS LINKING CCL FOR TREATMENT OF KERATOCONUS The aim of this procedure is to stabilize the cornea and prevent the progression of keratoconus It is a non invasive procedure that has been proven to strengthen the weak corneal structure in keratoconus This method works by inducing cross linking of the corneal collagen bundles which are the natural anchors within the cornea These anchors are responsible for preventing the cornea from further bulging and becoming irregular which is the cause of keratoconus The Corneal Cross Linking treatment is performed in our center and is a one time treatment During the treatment riboflavin eyedrops are applied to the cornea which is then activated by a special light This is the process that has been shown in laboratory and clinical studies to increase the amount of collagen cross linking in the cornea and strengthen the cornea In published European studies such treatments were proven safe and effective in patients After the treatment a bandage contact lens is applied and a combination of a steroid and antibiotic drop is prescribed In approximately 80 of the patients regression of the keratoconus could be seen No unwanted side effects such as opacification of the lens or loss of endothelial cells has been reported Only during the

walk in and walk out later but will need someone to drive you home after surgery Before surgery your doctor places anesthetizing drops in your eye and may give you a mild oral sedative During the procedure your surgeon creates a tunnel between layers of the corneal stroma outside of the central optical zone The surgeon then chooses the appropriate ring thickness A thicker ring in Intacs means more flattening of the cornea which increases the level of vision correction achieved After one or two crescent shaped Intacs are inserted into the tunnel the procedure is over After Intacs Surgery You ll probably rest for a while then go home have someone else drive you Most people have sharper vision the first day after surgery but you may need a couple of days of relaxation to promote healing You won t feel the ring segments because they are beneath the cornea s nerve endings Other people can t see them unless they look very closely into your eyes Intacs for myopia or keratoconus work by flattening corneal curvature Photo provided by the manufacturer Results of these implants will depend on the degree of keratoconus in each individual People with milder cases of keratoconus may not need any lenses for additional vision correction People with moderate keratoconus may require glasses or soft contact lenses for improved vision For more advanced cases rigid gas permeable contact lenses may be needed to improve vision or to delay or prevent the need for a corneal transplant Intacs can be very effective at changing the cornea and flattening the cone caused by keratoconus But if you have advanced keratoconus Intacs cannot halt the progression caused by weakening of surface eye tissue collagen responsible for corneal strength Research is continuing into an investigational procedure called corneal

your health age and whether or not you prefer to be asleep during the procedure With local anesthesia an injection into the skin around your eye is used to relax muscles that control blinking and eye movement and eye drops are used to numb the eye itself After the anesthesia has taken effect the eyelids are held open with a special instrument lid speculum Your eye surgeon inspects and measures the affected corneal area in order to determine the size of donor tissue needed A round button shaped section of tissue is then removed from your diseased or injured cornea Any additional work such as cataract removal is completed A nearly identical shaped button from the donor tissue is then sutured into place Finally the surgeon will place a plastic shield over your eye to protect it from being inadvertently rubbed or bumped The surgery takes one to two hours Recovering From a Cornea Transplant The total recovery time for a corneal transplant can be up to a year or longer Initially your vision will be blurry and the site of your corneal transplant may be swollen and slightly thicker than the rest of your cornea As your vision improves you will gradually be able to return to your normal daily activities A cornea transplant which replaces damaged tissue on the eye s clear surface also is referred to as a corneal transplant keratoplasty penetrating keratoplasty PK or corneal graft A graft replaces central corneal tissue damaged due to disease or eye injury with healthy corneal tissue donated from a local eye bank An unhealthy cornea affects your vision by scattering or distorting light and causing glare and blurred vision A cornea transplant may be necessary to restore your functional vision Cornea transplants are performed routinely In fact of all

Contact Lens ICL Procedure ICL eye surgery is a relatively quick and pain free outpatient surgical procedure Unlike LASIK surgery no laser is required for ICL eye surgery and the procedure can be reversed by performing an additional surgery to remove the lens ICL Eye Surgery The outpatient ICL eye surgery procedure is performed in less than 30 minutes Before the procedure the eye will be numbed with a topical or local anesthetic and a mild sedative may be given if necessary ICL eye surgery is similar to intraocular lens implant surgery except there is no need for cataract removal This allows the implantable contact lens to be inserted without removing the eye s natural lens Instead during ICL eye surgery the implantable contact lens in inserted through a small incision in the eye and placed into its position in front of the natural lens Two types of lenses are available for ICL eye surgery A foldable lens the Visian ICL is inserted through a small incision and unfolds into its place between the iris and the eye s natural lens This procedure requires an extremely small incision that is self healing The Verisyse lens on the other hand is inserted in front of the iris through a somewhat larger incision that must be closed with sutures which dissolve over time ICL Eye Surgery Recovery Similar to intraocular lens surgery recovery you will need to return to your ophthalmologist for a follow up visit within 24 hours of your ICL eye surgery You may be instructed to use eye drops and a protective shield after the placement of your implanted contact lens in order to protect your eye as it heals Any minor pain associated with the ICL eye surgery can be treated with over the counter pain medications You

eye doctor will examine your eyes to make sure they are in good health and to determine the kind of vision correction you need Your doctor will also look for signs of dry eye insufficient tears or reduced quality of tears which may need treatment before lasik Also a corneal topography is usually done to map your cornea together with a pachymetry to measure corneal thickness With the new wavefront technology associated with custom LASIK you also are likely to undergo a wavefront analysis to provide an even more precise map of errors affecting your vision More sophisticated tests are also available contrast sensitivity function and ocular response analyzer depending on doctor s recommendation to analyze your eye with great accuracy to assess the fitness of your eye for lasik procedure If you are a candidate for Lasik You need to remove your soft contact lenses at least 1 week before the exam and laser treatment For hard and gas permeable contact lenses this period is 3 weeks On the day of laser treatment please do not wear any make up eye and face cream moisturizer perfume or after shave lotion Since the laser room is cold wear warm comfortable

on this page requires a newer version of Adobe Flash Player The surgeon then uses the excimer laser to reshape the exposed middle layer of the cornea this laser emits energy in the ultraviolot range 193 nm which acts only on the surface The laser evaporates the selected tissue without generating any heat or transmitting the laser radiation to any other part of the eye This process leaves no trace on adjacent tissue or elsewhere inside the eye In correcting near sightedness myopia the laser reduces the central corneal curvature by removing microscopic amounts of corneal tissue in the center In correcting far sightedness hyperopia the laser increases the central corneal curvature by removing microscopic amounts of the corneal tissue near the periphery of the cornea The flap is then placed back to its original position where it takes the new shape created by the laser The adhesion becomes very strong within 3 5 minutes without a need for any suture The eye is then covered with a plastic eye shield which is held in place by adhesive tapes The eyes shield has perforations in it to allow the patient to see through The patient can then return home The

better vision than is possible with contact lenses or glasses With a wavefront measurement system extremely precise individualized vision correction outcomes can be achieved that would be impossible with conventional LASIK surgery With custom LASIK your eye s ability to focus light rays is measured a map is created that demonstrates irregularities in the way your eye processes images Information contained in the map guides the laser in customizing the treatment to reshape the corneal surface so that these irregularities can be corrected Conventional LASIK procedures can correct ordinary vision defects such as myopia hyperopia and astigmatism but other irregularities associated with the eye s optical system could not be addressed until the advent of wavefront and it s related technology used in custom LASIK Benefits of Wavefront Guided Custom LASIK Wavefront technology it has the potential to improve not only how much you can see but also how well you can see in terms of contrast sensitivity and fine detail This translates into a reduced risk of post LASIK complications such as glare halos and difficulty with night vision How much you see depends on vision defects known as lower order aberrations associated with common refractive errors including myopia hyperopia and astigmatism How much you can see can be measured by standard 20 20 chart and can be treated by conventional LASIK How well you see can depend on presence of visual distortions known as higher order aberrations which can include irregularities other than common refractive errors These higher order aberrations can create problems such as decreased contrast sensitivity or night vision glare shadows and halos Unlike conventional LASIK custom LASIK treats both lower and higher order aberrations A wavefront LASIK creates a highly individualized laser correction of your eye s surface guided by precise analysis of visual errors
