Take the wild confluence of late spring unemployment numbers and recent electoral polling in so called swing states The latest numbers 8 2 national unemployment leave out a great number of Americans who have either given up or who have been unemployed so long that they no longer qualify for benefits The math on the latter takes into account both exhausted claims now that Congress has struck down extensions and those unable to file new ones because they have no W 4 income over a period of 18 months no W 4 s no claims And yet news organizations desperately needing a horse race presidential election more than a sober discussion of why unemployment is stagnating hint those capable of hiring the need to maintain profit expectations no hiring and or layoffs play recent polls in states such as Virginia as if they actually mean something They don t This is July Presidential election polling means almost as little this July as it did last July Why Those answering the phones don t feel any real pressure to make a decision yet They see a national unemployment number one that in fact may be quite higher than in their state or municipality get understandably angry at the lack of progress know that their decision today means absolutely nothing and say Yeah I vote for the other guy They have that luxury And even with that luxury Mitt Romney only pulled into a statistical tie in Virginia with incumbent President Barack Obama Come November as it happens every November a lot of those same potential voters will ask Which one of these guys will do the most damage and with their decision counting for something they ll choose the incumbent either because he s a known quantity or because what they

is that he is a bully You might think they should have known that already and if we re being honest his bullying is a huge part of what makes him so popular with the right wing base Really who doesn t love watching a loud mouthed jerk tear into other people As long as he s directing his bile at some kind of them and not us that s just entertainment Of course Thursday night Trump turned that bile against the one person he shouldn t have one of Fox News pretty blonde anchors The audience in Cleveland chuckled when Trump said he only attacked Rosie O Donnell She is vocally left wing not physically attractive and notably for the right wing a lesbian This is pretty much the exact opposite of Fox News Megyn Kelly who has gotten a free pass on stating some pretty astounding bullshit through the years primarily because she is what so many of Fox News audience want the fantasy of a woman they can either be or have This of course was Trump s mistake Had he reserved his vindictiveness to follow one of the two male moderators questions Trump would not be facing the backlash he has faced over the past few days And yet he chose Kelly for the same reason he chose O Donnell because she is a woman In Trump s mind and if we re being honest the other men on the stage with him women are weak They do not lead they follow He has spent decades surrounding himself with women who fit that mold He may claim to be attracted to strong independent women but his actions when faced with them constantly put the lie to that Bully that he is Trump is genuinely threatened by them Watching his thinly veiled threats that he would no longer be nice to Kelly as if he had been it takes little imagination to think how he would handle Hillary Clinton in a general election The thing is little imagination is exactly what Trump was hoping he would get with the Republican voters watching on Thursday Why else try to bully them too Lost in the furor over his vindictive attacks on Kelly was his nake threat to undermine whomever Republicans might choose if not him It was the very first thing he said Had he left it at that Trump might have gotten away with nothing more than a tongue lashing from Senator Rand Paul which is to say nothing at all No one cared The 16 Others as his campaign might have called them all would have tried to make something out of it but without a pretty face to put to the threat they all would have failed What will happen next is this Donald Trump will keep doubling down both on standing by what he said and insisting that what he said was taken out of context or deliberately misinterpreted by someone out to get him This folks is the Donald s pattern He ll hope it will go away as it has just about every other time Seriously who s talking about John McCain War Hero now About as many as are talking about his threat to undermine the Republican nominee Having given Fox News all of the ammunition it ever needed Trump will find himself plummeting in the polls Since Fox News basically owns the Republican debates Trump will find himself out of the top ten and facing the choice of sharing a stage in an empty room with former governors Geroge Pataki and Jim Gilmore Jim Gilmore or finding a stage all his own complete with store bought supporters and his name in golden letters Donald Trump won t get what he claims he wants the Republican nomination but he ll at least get to leave on his own demanding terms The guy likely to get what Trump wants by the way is Florida Senator Marco Rubio His combover not Trump s will likely grace the stage in Cleveland when Fox News coronates the Republican nominee next year Rubio has reinvented himself yet again this time as the Republican Party s version of Barack Obama the candidate not the president Rubio has smoothed out his own rough vaguely ethnic edges as well as his hair He may talk Latino but only in the safe white washed tones of the Washington establishment Fox News was created to protect However ironic it may seem that Rubio would emulate the man he desperately needs to criticize in order to win it makes perfect sense because the Obama brand is a proven winner Of course every Obama needs a Biden and Rubio may have found his in Ohio Governor John Kasich If he somehow isn t bumped in favor of Carly Fiorina Fox News early debate favorite Kasich could make the case for a Florida Ohio ticket something the Republican establishment surely has wet dreams about Beyond these three men there really wasn t any sense in paying much attention to the remaining wannabes sharing the stage with them Jeb Bush comes across as less charismatic and at times somehow even less competant than his brother People may end up forgetting him before they forget his name Scott Walker comes across like the sadistic frat brother who really enjoys hazing pledges what he s done in Wisconsin may endear him to corporations but it won t even get him half consideration for Vice President Chris Christie wants to punch everybody EVERYBODY Rand Paul will make strong important points about the military industrial complex and corporate money in politics but no one will forget his own hypocrisy about being a so called libertarian or his hair because Republican voters are shallow like that Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz are jokes They stick around by throwing poo at the wall Poo tends not to stick past New Hampshire Ben Carson is no joke He s scary a sincere religious zealot with as little imagination as Trump was hoping to find in his audience Carly Fiorina is a woman something Fox News desperately wants in the top tier debates if only to have an answer to Hillary Clinton Unfortunately aside from hacking away at Trump and anyone named Clinton Fiorina actual policy positions are even more corporate friendly than Trump s which is saying something Her time in prime time will be short The others governors Pataki Gilmore Rick Perry Bobby Jindal and senators Rick Santorum and Lindsay Graham all suffer from the delusion that their coverage will ever not be grouped with others Of them only Graham managed to stand out stating that climate change is a real thing in a Republican debate but tempering it by insisting that invading Iraq is something we should do again Yup Frankly it s a wonder any of them think they belong in a conversation about the presidency let alone the White House but such is the ego driven world of presidential politics It s worth noting that last Thursday the day of the Republican debates was August 6th the 70th anniversary of dropping the world s first atom bomb on Hiroshima Japan It was also the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act something never more relevant coming just days before the first anniversary of the killing of Mike Brown in Ferguson Missouri Fox News and the 17 Republicans they gathered had hours to discuss these three important anniversaries all of which continue to impact the lives of all Americans Not one of these issues was mentioned let alone discussed It may be that Republican voters don t want to hear about them It may be that TV viewers find discussions of issues like these or climate change to be sleep inducing It may be that any Republican candidate attempting to discuss them will like Senator Graham find himself talking to an empty room It is the fear of that empty room that explains what we witnessed from Donald Trump Thursday night It is fear of being ignored that explains the litany of batshit crazy things Ted Cruz promised to do on Day One Chris Christie wrapping himself up in 9 11 Giuliani style only happens when a man is desperate to connect to something that connected before These men are desperate for attention and the sad truth is that none of them have anything to offer but bombast and fantasy They no longer know how This is the world Fox News made Right wing candidates already had little inclination towards actual discussion Shallow attention grabbing is what the network and its audience want Can we really be shocked then when that shallow attention grabbing blows back in their collective faces Well we shouldn t be but somehow we seem to be It may just be possible that we fear that empty room ourselves Daniel Ward 1 note Permalink Posted at 3 27 PM Tagged republican debates Rupert Murdoch Donald Trump megyn kelly hiroshima Voting Rights Act mike brown ferguson missouri carly fiorina Bobby Jindal scott walker hillary clinton The Empty Room Feb 15 The Republican Response Bobby Jindal will not be the next President of the United States Given his recent polling he may not even win reelection as Governor of Louisiana It s still early though he has three years left on his term so for now he s safe to speak his mind What he said a few months ago was this Stop being the stupid party Of course he said a lot more than that A lot more And kept saying it The gist of what he meant beyond the obvious Shut the hell up on rape was that the Republicans have dug themselves into an ideological ditch and have got to stop trying to dig themselves out of it The irony here is that one of the core tenets of that ideology ending the deficit has Republicans making that same argument about the Democrats The problem here is that Jindal s audience his fellow Republicans refuse to recognize that irony As a matter of fact many of them welcomed Jindal s criticism about as warmly as corrupt New York cops welcomed Frank Serpico back in the 60 s A few old stalwarts ventured to agree with him but the bulk of today s GOP are divided into two camps and neither camp wants to hear their product is flawed One side reverted to the cherished standby of tweaking the messaging as though the American people will buy anything so long as it s packaged right This is classic short term thinking making it exactly what we should expect from the right wing of any party in any country Just about everything George Orwell ever wrote was about messaging had he lived long enough he might have enjoyed how short term thinking leads to short term solutions which leads inevitably to short term governments The idea that what the Republicans were selling in November was the problem must be heartbreaking for those who placed so much faith in it It was still crap Rebranding it as New Crap just won t work By short term thinking and short term solutions I mean that even the best marketed crap has a short term shelf life Embracing this non rebranding rebranding effort nonetheless this faction chose to have Florida Latino Senator Marco Rubio respond to the President s State of the Union Address on Tuesday Knowing how important Latinos will be in the next election and the one after that Rubio was the natural choice as the party standard bearer much as Jindal was a few years ago when he failed not to put his national audience to sleep Rubio proceeded to tell his story in quotation marks because it like the idea of responding to a speech by not actually responding to it is more a matter of branding than something real The story that Rubio told that he s just a middle class American trying to look out for his neighbors by protecting them from the big bad government was chock full of contradictions and worse He needed government handouts as a youth but he claims government handouts make people lazy dependent and prisoners of bureaucracy And he s middle class but only if you ignore the millions he s made in the last decade courtesy of the friends he s made in his government jobs especially once he became Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives ten years ago That s the worse part Not only did he benefit from a generous nanny state for his upbringing and education he benefitted even more from a political system in Florida that if it operated in just about any other state would simply be called graft Even his boot straps are bought and paid for And somehow Rubio spoke Tuesday night as though this sort of thing wasn t immediately knowable to anyone with a search engine Stupid The other so called Tea Party faction which Rubio was alleged to have represented at some point also had its response Tuesday nigh It was given by Kentucky Republican Rand Paul Didn t see it Check YouTube No broadcast network showed it which is a pity because it was hilarious just not in the way Paul or his backers intended He might as well have been wearing a tinfoil hat How much does he make from the federal government How much do his constituents receive from the bloated federal largess At least he mentioned Obama s kill list and drone program Then again he also repeated Romney s Obama bought the election with gifts line and the myth that Obama issued executive orders on guns Tinfoil hat And now having exhausted themselves in their own obstructionism congressional Republicans have tried to rebrand the Fiscal Cliff aka the Sequester as Obama s solution to the hostage debt crisis Yes folks it s what he intended to happen and if we let it happen everyone will suffer and President Poopy Head will have to negotiate like we want him to by which we mean all spending cuts and no revenue increases It s so clever no one watching at home in horror will ever see through it If the Democrats don t like it they can just give us what we want and or stop hurting our feelings Tantrums What s that more you say How about filibustering nominees to obtain information on things they had nothing to do with Thank you Senator Lindsey Graham How about criticizing a minimum wage increase because it will cause massive layoffs Actually that was Senator Rubio in his response actually responding to a point Obama raised between comical gulps of water That one s recycled from the old Obamacare routine Apparently you can t do anything good for Americans by raising their wages Rubio seems to suggest lowering them might work better No need to tweak that last one If it worked last time Daniel Ward Permalink Posted at 5 40 PM Tagged republicans debt ceiling fiscal cliff hostage taking Mitch McConnell John Boehner eric cantor aggressive selfishness mitt romney koch brothers Tea Republican Response Feb 12 A Second First Term When President Obama speaks before Congress tonight it will be to launch his second term Again His second Inaugural Address cribbed in equal parts from the Constitution President Lincoln and Dr Martin Luther King Jr was filled with wide eyed notions of what people used to call a little lookin out for the other fella Surprising no one those championing not looking out for others took exception to that following the same sorry script we ve come to expect Tonight s speech will be different even if the reaction sounds thunderingly familiar It will in many ways be a relaunch of his first term an opportunity to raise issues that were ignored or lost in four years of trench warfare with congressional Republicans For this reason the President will talk about jobs Certainly no other issue was so critically bungled by both Obama and Congress as the widespread long term unemployment plaguing the country over the past five years He ll talk about the economy and jobs energy independence and jobs immigration and jobs and veterans and jobs He ll talk about it in a way which we have not heard him speak to date He will be passionate for him He will be forceful He will be uncompromising And he will state that he and Congress owe the American people better They do Will these words achieve anything Those who watched the first four years of the Barack Obama Show can t have a lot of hope for the next series Whenever the President talks about jobs and the sputtering economy tonight it will be impossible not to think about the wasted opportunities of his first 18 months when he seemed to look for any and every way to meet the Republicans in the middle only to be told he hadn t gone far enough The long bitter battle over the ill advised healthcare bill a battle that could have and should have waited for job creation and prosecuting those responsible for the financial collapse on Wall Street consumed those priorities and many many more The resulting legislation gutted and Public Option less will ultimately fail to accomplish its stated goal to make healthcare both cheaper and accessible for Americans It s ultimate failure may lead to the changes we need but that s not the same thing The rest

  • Political Theatre - Aggressive Selfishness
well take more lives than open warfare But you knew that too It seems ironic at first that people would insist that they shouldn t have to be held accountable to anyone else while insisting just as strongly that everyone else be held accountable to them but it isn t Hypocrisy is exactly what we expect it to be Resistance to regulation and other forms of government intrusion in business makes sense if you believe that you should not have to be accountable to others Intrusions into the lives of others at home and abroad makes sense if you believe everyone else has to be accountable to you However twisted there s a logic to it There are some who d say no there isn t Intrusion is intrusion in business or in bedrooms at home or abroad These very few are libertarians and we know they re actually libertarian and not just claiming the title because they hold to that one ideal that government has no place messing in anybody s life anywhere Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan aren t anything close to libertarian They re simply right wing They advocate big government where it suits them which is to say where it profits them Romney s performance in the foreign policy debate demonstrated one thing beyond his embarrassingly loose grasp of Middle East geography he sees no limit on American interference in the lives of anyone anywhere outside the boundaries of American territory He sees no limit on spending either In that last debate he tried to walk back some of his most ambitious comments such as the idea of sending troops into Libya and Syria and Mali but the overwhelming costs of American troop deployments both financially and diplomatically weren t mentioned by him They wouldn t be He s a believer in American Exceptionalism and you can t put a price on that And that is the core of what is driving the modern Republican Party aggressive selfishness Aggressive selfishness is a motivation Each of us has it to some degree It s all about the short term short term profits short term thinking short sightedness The universe doesn t exist beyond what the aggressively selfish can see time doesn t exist beyond what the aggressively selfish feel Today s Republican Party is dominated by aggressive selfishness The thing is being all about the short term it will be destroyed by it too There is no better icon for it than Paul Ryan s hero Ayn Rand In both domestic and foreign affairs the belief that you never have to be accountable to anyone but everyone must still be accountable to you is the toxic distillation of everything Rand preached It is selfishness compressed like carbon into a diamond That s what makes it so attractive But how much carbon does it take to make a diamond and how much does that leave for everybody else The aggressively selfish live in fear The world for them
