Vaguely worded with almost as many loopholes as tax laws it offers an escape from accountability while trumpeting for those attuned to the code that the world has not been accountable and deserves what it gets It s cowboy frontier justice a love letter to Ayn Rand and with its simplistic promise and catastrophic results just as dangerous What separates Florida s law from the traditional use of self defense laws is where and when it allows that self defense to take place Florida like a few other states in recent years has removed any and all limits It only requires that the one doing the killing has a right to be where he is and feels his life is in danger What this implies rightly or not is that anyone not recognized as having a right to be where he is and therefore posing a threat as strangers will pose is fair game George Zimmerman the man who admitted to shooting the unrecognized unarmed hoodie wearing Trayvon Martin started his own neighborhood watch in a gated community in Florida just a few months ago The words gated community should be a red flag in any discussion of this case Whether Zimmerman was an official security guard or not he has and will likely continue to claim that in playing that role he effectively extended the reach of the Castle Doctrine codified four hundred years ago by a man named Edward Coke pronounced cook If a man s home is his castle and he has a right to kill anyone invading that castle then a man patrolling a gated community might claim that same right Zimmerman did and the local police saw fit to let it drop It has been reported that Zimmerman cried for days in remorse It would be understandable certainly for most people The safe comforting fantasy provided by laws such as Stand Your Ground is both safe and comforting because most people will never have to deal with it they can approve killing and never have to think about it again That kind of detachment is very attractive A law that promises to keep undesirables and the killing of undesirables far away is doubly so For people like Zimmerman who by many accounts fantasized about serving in law enforcement the law provided that opportunity to be a protector and a hero dealing out justice with impunity And he got to live that fantasy as long as he didn t do more than make believe The reality of killing a boy who posed no threat to anyone should be more than any sane man could take and we should have at least as much compassion for Zimmerman as any genuine remorse he feels There are others though as we have seen too often who have either felt no remorse or who have done whatever it took to keep it like other things and people they fear at more than arm s length Some on the political right

James Webb for his part was certainly the toughest candidate on the stage repeatedly referring back to his military combat experience unique among the Democratic or Republican candidates and repeatedly chastising Anderson Cooper for allowing the debate to focus too much on Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders Cooper rightly pointed out that Webb and the others had all agreed to CNN s rules so if Webb or anyone else didn t see that result coming he really hurt his chances of having his issues heard just by complaining about it He might stick around longer than Chafee but not by much Governor Martin O Malley on the other hand helped himself a lot A LOT Arguably few outside of Maryland had ever heard of him or realized it if they had He may not be anybody s first choice but he seemed to hold his ground against Clinton and Sanders If all he did was solidify his third place rank it was all he had to do to ensure he sticks around into the actual election year It may even have been enough to gain him consideration for second place on Clinton or Sander s ticket It probably won t be with Senator Sanders though O Malley hammered Sanders on gun control Well it was as close as anyone got to hammering anyone else O Malley like the others kept it a matter of policy rather than making it personal but the exchange exposed Sanders flaw which is that he was not prepared to think on his feet to brush off an attack and turn it to his advantage Sanders has surely given every issue a lot of thought but when pressed on this one on his history of siding with gun manufacturers he panicked and repeated campaign talking points It made Sanders look weak and worse for him it showed Clinton what she d need to beat him She will surely use that tactic if Sanders can t figure out how to handle it If Secretary Clinton tag teams with O Malley to take Sanders down in the next Democratic debate it will all be guarantee her the nomination Unlike Sanders she pivoted and outmaneuvered every attempt to throw her Of course she s effectively been running for president for fifteen years and has had a tutor far more charismatic than she ll ever be so the debate stage is her natural environment It s hard to get a read on someone so adept at not answering questions except of course to note that she really is prone not to answer questions It makes Clinton seem for lack of a better adjective slick just like her beloved tutor It makes her seem untrustworthy and suggests that she s hiding things even when she might not be And yet Hillary Clinton remains even more so now the likely Democratic nominee someone with huge negatives but still polling well ahead of every Republican crowding the field So who will she choose to be her running mate Yes it seems wildly early to think of such things but why not She have to balance the ticket That s what parties do She s old so she ll need someone young She seems to represent the Northeast so she ll need someone outside of it from the South or West or Southwest She s white and while that s stopped no one in the past the time and latino voting base are ripe for the picking For these reasons expect to hear the name Julian Castro thrown around more and more as 2016 stretches out into Summer He s in his early 40 s latino was the Mayor of the southwest city of San Antonio and currently serves President Obama as his Secretary of Housing and Urban Development There are other possibilities such as Governor O Malley or New York Senator Kristin Gillibrand whom Clinton pointed out in the Las Vegas audience last night but Castro will probably win Then it s all up or down to Obama Daniel Ward Permalink Posted at 11 15 PM Tagged democratic debate bernie sanders martin o malley james webb lincoln chafee gun control ronald reagan Trench Warfare Karl Rove seems to think that all the Republicans really need to take back the Senate in 2014 is to find the right candidates Stop laughing He said it So too have many other notable Republican leaders It was part of their rebranding campaign Of course being notable Republican leaders they have to say things like that And as it is so difficult to tell when they re telling the truth it would be understandable if we assumed Karl Rove was just being well Karl Rove After all what would Rove s perfect candidates be running on The latest achievement of current Republican senators

bargaining depression and acceptance We see something so horrible Kübler Ross was writing about death but it could be any threat and our first reaction is that it s so horrible we must be imagining it We ll do anything to avert our gaze We ll make a joke of it or waste valuable time looking for something anything ridiculous about it So we can make a joke of it Entire industries are built around this including fake news Stupid nonsensical gobbledigook urging us to focus on what liberals like to eat and drink Sure we ll take that How about a nickname for a program we want them to fear Check How about the color of their skin or their foreign sounding middle name Like we even had to ask It makes them look different from us and that makes them easier to fear and hate It s bullying and that after all is what the right wing does best It s what makes them so attractive The left wing has its charms too using humor best observed on the fake fake news and actual facts to draw attention to threats rather than deflect it And yet how many late night monologues have instead focused our attention on misspoken words bad tans and other superficial waste We like it We like it a lot In fact we like it more because it allows us to forget those threats And that s where we are now overwhelmed and trying to forget A week or so into the federal government shutdown and a week or so away from what would be a maniacally stupid default on our debt we re still trying to make a joke of it still desperately floating myths about how harmless defaulting on debt obligations really is In this delirium shutdowns and defaults aren t the wildly incompetent irresponsible acts of imbeciles they re the principled stands of underdogs and patriots The inescapable truth however is that whatever indignation they ve mustered for the cameras the Republicans goal of reducing government oversight and their own accountability has never seemed so close Heck the Republican leadership has been positively gleeful By leadership of course I mean the ones with leadership positions in Congress and the ones with eyes on the 2016 Presidential nomination It s quite a group each easier to make fun of than the last We laugh at John Boehner s orange skin and penchant for crying at Michelle Bachman s crazed eyes and crazier declarations at Mitch McConnell s resemblance to a turtle and so on They make it easy maybe too easy And they take comfort in it every joke aimed their way reinforcing the myth that this is war and their enemies on the Left are out to get them It deflects blame away from them They need that As much as they are to blame for what we are and are about to go through they desperately need it However for all of the ways the Republicans are to blame for this mess we must be careful to remember that there is one way we The People are to blame as well We ve taken the right wing encroachment on our republic the way countless others have before us looking at the buffoonery of the right wing leadership and laughing at them Think Europeans in the 1930s laughing at the funny little man with the mustache In making laughing at these men and women our chief defense we ve allowed ourselves to ignore the real danger lurking underneath their goofy exteriors It s not like this is something new in American politics We ve always lampooned our presidents In the last forty years or so however we ve allowed those caricatures to stand in for examining just what these men were doing Maybe it all started as exhaustion from Vietnam and Watergate Gerald Ford a widely respected congressman was reduced to a bumbling klutz Jimmy Carter who has a degree in nuclear physics was all teeth and peanuts Ronald Reagan was asleep half the time and popping jelly beans the rest George H W Bush was a prissy wimp By the time we reached Bill Clinton with his saxophone and predilection for well cigars and Big Macs taking the president seriously was over W was pegged as an idiot from day one and ran with it encouraging late night jokes about his ineptitude as a campaign strategy just as successfully as his predecessor Bubba had with being fat and horny No fancypants liberal elitists here folks This reduction of the job of president from a serious chief executive to a goofy chairman of the board took attention away from whom they chose to make decisions on our behalf And we all know how well the last forty years have turned out They were great for Wall Street and terrible for everyone else Electing Barack Obama was supposed to change that He was supposed to be the grown up in the room We still make fun of his halting speech delivery but it s hard to make fun of anything else unless of course you re racist and or Islamophobic No he s sober and opaque too opaque really and only dangerous if you live in range of a drone strike which few in Washington will fault him on Thankfully or not the Tea Party Republicans have risen up to seize the mantle We laugh at the way they talk at the way they say completely idiotic things with such deep earnestness and at their monumental misunderstanding of how dangerous destroying the federal government would be We laugh at them because it s funny We laugh at them because we re scared We laugh at them because if we looked at what they were proposing and gave serious thought to how it would harm us and everyone around us we would fly into a terrifying rage So we laugh and hold onto our

panicking with him One would hope That panic however would probably be short lived While President Rouhani has been called a moderate and compared to his hard core predecessor he is this is very much a cold war with a cold war mindset Think Khrushchev following Stalin Nikita Khrushchev unlike Rouhani had to consolidate his power crushing the Hungarians as a warning to the rest of the Eastern Bloc and to the United States After that Khrushchev like Rouhani commenced a period of being conciliatory towards potential enemies ruffling feathers at home even as he smoothed them over abroad It s a balancing act Khrushchev famously pounded his shoe on the podium at the U N as much a show for those at home as it was for President Kennedy Khushchev is still somewhat beloved in the West but his U N performance never helped him overcome weakness at home The real power in the Soviet Union the Politburo forced him out and his successors used irrational fear of the West to hold onto power for another thirty years and perhaps quite a bit longer talkin about you Putin Of course this isn t just about Hassan Rouhani s possible personal desire for détente There was already an expectation that he and President Obama would and should talk The civil war in Syria tied politically economically and religiously with Iran is catastrophe for everyone The resolution unanimously passed by the United Nations Security Council this week orders the destruction of Syria s chemical weapons it is without military backing so everybody needs Iran to make it happen And Iran knows it They need Iran s leadership on terrorism too Islamist terrorists from Somalia just attacked a western style mall in Nairobi Kenya the Muslim Brotherhood has just been banned in Egypt Again northern Pakistan is now known for two things the Taliban and collateral damage from American drone strikes Libya remains a chaotic mess and insurgent groups held together by little more than the promise of fighting for something greater than themselves are waging wars too small to maintain headlines from the Sahara to the Philippines Oh and then there are those groups fighting to dislodge Bashar al Assad the ones who refuse to join with the non Islamist groups if they somehow succeed The international muslim community needs a moderate moderating voice someone angry alienated muslims so very sick of those at the top telling them how to live might listen to Who better than the leader of the great enemy of the United States We could only hope Daniel Ward 1 note Permalink Posted at 11 52 AM Tagged islam israel iran iraq syria saudi arabia politics barack obama united nations nikita khrushchev joseph stalin cold war enemies Benjamin Netanyahu soviet union Vladimir Putin bashar al assad Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hassan rouhani Enemies pt 12 Jan 31 Who s Next And it s Russia s turn or so headlines would suggest The excitement in the speculation is palpable Yes
