more speculation about what really happened and more opinions about what it all means Everyone seems to have something to say Yet it was and remains a tragedy We don t treat it that way but perhaps that s just the passage of time The family of Dallas police officer J D Tippet also murdered by Oswald surely still grieves at what was taken from them and let us not forget from him He wasn t famous or beloved as a celebrity as Kennedy was but he deserved better in our memory and still does There are of course those who mourn what they believe died with Kennedy the bright Liberal promised land represented in his campaign and inaugural address There isn t any logic to this belief As we now know all too well the politician is one animal as he campaigns and quite another as he governs Kennedy for instance pushed civil rights as a candidate but pulled back as president to appease southern congressional Democrats For him to risk his own political capital he would need outside support from non violent campaigners in the South Without their personal sacrifices displayed widely on TV he was powerless Who knows what Kennedy could have accomplished had he finished his first term and been reelected We ll never know and that makes it easy to project onto him Odds are we d remember his signing of the Voting Rights Act and Civil Rights Act as well as his creation of Medicare all triumphs so closely associated with Lyndon Johnson but we might also remember Kennedy s fiasco in Vietnam and how it destroyed so many lives Whatever Americans hoped Kennedy s New Frontier would be it was never going be fast or easy and it would always require sacrifice He made that clear That not the fantasy of the utopia Kennedy might have created is a loss we should mourn Fifity years on the notion of making sacrifices for the sake of others is almost alien to American society The programs Kennedy advocated still exist in some form or another but they are shadows underfunded and disappearing almost as quickly as the middle class that backed them Yes we have a black president something few in 1963 would have dared imagine but President Obama like every president since Reagan shrinks from asking us to sacrifice anything today to achieve anything tomorrow Obama is a product of his times as Kennedy was his Kennedy s Congress and his generation of voters had already sacrificed in the Great Depression and Second World War so speaking to them of sacrifice wasn t foreign They knew he d sacrificed too complete with the Hollywood ending Obama s Congress and generation by contrast have been spoiled not merely by a decades long steady diet of easy short term solutions to difficult long term problems but by never having had to face personal sacrifice themselves The political leaders are entertainers and buffoons We cheer their pratfalls

once in a while someone will come along and try to appeal to everyone s inner spoiled 5 year old This election cycle it s Donald Trump He is far more than her senatorial namesake the Ayn Rand candidate He claims to be self sufficient even though he plainly isn t He claims that one group is more valuable to the United States and that others have no value at all He demands respect while offering none and demands apologies for sleights while continuing to bully those around him In short Trump s campaign has been little more than a spoiled brat throwing a tantrum The appeal is clear He is more than just an Ayn Rand candidate he an Affluenza candidate too The frustrated and impatient children of all ages can live vicariously through him It explains his early success and it explains why he will ultimately fail even a spoiled brat must be held accountable at some point Enough will eventually be enough and the community will resolve to end it Someone else will come along someday to test that resolve and they will succeed and then fail the same way Daniel Ward Permalink Posted at 5 58 PM Tagged resolutions politics equal rights right wing aggressive selfishness affluenza accountability ayn rand Donald Trump rand paul mexico the united states constitution culture moral disengagement Resolve Dec 14 View high resolution Pat Bagley The Salt Lake Tribune 12 10 15 Permalink Posted at 10 04 AM Tagged antonin scalia The Supreme Court racism segregation institutionalized racism right wing Political Theatre Nov 26 Call And Response pt 2 Admit it nothing Donald Trump says or does shocks you It certainly doesn t surprise you His shtick is as we knew almost before we knew him calculated to shock and surprise and if everything he says or does is calculated it is therefore meant to meet the expectations of an audience and being so can neither shock nor surprise anyone familiar with it or him Or shouldn t Trump s playing a role of course Maybe it s the fiendish villain twirling his moustache that one you kind of root for because the hero is so wooden and boring Or maybe it s the drunk uncle insulting those other people at the holiday dinner It doesn t matter which he acts like a jerk because he knows it s exactly what his audience wants If this all sounds familiar it may be because Trump and the other Republican presidential candidates attacked MSNBC s moderators when one of them dared to suggest this premise at their debate Again however this is what was expected Attacking the person asking a difficult question is an age old staple of right wing politics useful both for avoiding answering unwanted questions and for meeting the expectation of right wing voters and donors of refusing to defer to others authority How strange it would feel for those looking for an aggressive bully of a leader to see

plan to keep the scary refugees out Some plans would allow Christian refugees in because no one ever killed in the name of Christianity right but all would safely ensure that voters and donors fears wouldn t be wasted What s important for those on the outside looking in not just the refugees is that right wing voters and donors feel the same way The voters Trump is trying to recruit to his cause are at the very least genuinely irrationally afraid Their genuine irrational ignorance of Muslims oddly makes many of them feel safe It provides a sense of control over chaos much in the same way a candidate s refusal to admit he s wrong does Certainty is what makes the right wing so appealing It reduces everything to right and wrong order and chaos good and evil strength and weakness us and them It s what draws frightened men and women to it and what compels the to commit atrocities in its name Never doubt that Trump or any politician recommending vile racist behavior in the aftermath of a terrorist attack hasn t done the simple math that what he s saying is what he thinks frightened people want to hear Trump may not need donors money but he ll certainly accept it and if you think he has any moral qualms about race baiting or fearmongering in general you haven t been paying attention Again Trump won t win anything The closer primary voters actually get to having to commit to someone the farther Trump or anyone like him actually gets from their votes Nevertheless he wrapped up his Thanksgiving week by making fun of the disability of the journalist he sourced for his Muslim celebration claim Why That journalist had dared refute him publicly and well that s what you get It was greeted with mild indignation and a chorus of shrugs Does that shock you Really Daniel Ward 2 notes Permalink Posted at 1 57 PM Tagged donald trump aggressive selfishness defensive selfishness politics 2016 republican candidates msnbc republican debate fearmongering racism terrorism right wing bullying carly fiorina ben carson non Trump chris christie muslims islam islamophobia deference to authority dramaturgy Call And Response pt 2 Sep 24 Accepting The Call We could be forgiven for thinking all the entire world wants to think about is Pope Francis visiting the United States His is an impressive story a man plucked from seeming obscurity to lead a powerful influencial institution and effecting real change in the world and the way the American media have been covering it all other news seems almost un newsworthy For instance it would be easy to forget that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker quit running for president That may be a testament to how forgettable his campaign was which in turn probably has something to do with how forgettable he ultimately will be as a man but we must try remembering why he became so forgettable all the more so because

cannot see a woman being that bold Carly Fiorina gave it her best shot mercilessly spouting off imaginary statistics about the economy and her resumé and solumn diatribes about shocking and terrifying although ultimately fake abortion videos She scored points with the Republican base not only for whipping up fear of government funded horrors but for defiantly refusing to admit that she could have been wrong about any of it let alone that her claims might be complete bullshit It gave her a short term boost in polling and fundraising but it was only going to last as long as she could pull off the role of non Trump Trump which for her only lasted until her novelty wore off It s hard to out Trump Trump at being Trump and Fiorina just isn t bullshit artist enough One thing Trump has that she doesn t is a long track record of attacking people for calling him on his bullshit He s relentless He won t come close to winning this or any nomination but he s spent so much time at the top of the shallow Republican polls seriously who else has even cracked 30 precisely because he keeps people talking about him Trump s latest calculated embarrassment came Monday when he suggested that thousands of New Jersey Muslims celebrated when terrorists attacked the United States on 9 11 Obviously it s a load of horseshit insulting not only to all Muslims and all those who were murdered that day but in particular to those Muslims who lost loved ones to those murderers on that day It also insults our intelligence but that s less important because the public response to it like every other piece of horseshit and bullshit flyng out of his mouth has been comical The mainstream media bullied long ago into equivocation effectively threw up its hands and shrugged offering us a What are you gonna do It s just Trump being Trump right In this way they too are meeting expectations just ones that happen to be very very low What s telling though is that most of Trump s opponents also failed to call him on it Those who did such as New Jersey Governor Chris Christie had little support from the Republican base One who initially backed Trump up claiming to have seen shocking and offensive videos of Muslims on that day later backtracked campaign spokespeople claiming the candidate had somehow confused New Jersey for the Middle East No really That candidate wasn t Carly Fiorina of course but Ben Carson He like Trump has seized upon the terror attacks in Paris to whip up fear of Muslims and other outsiders Mostly of Muslims The Republican base loves that By the end of the weekend most of the Republican candidates had some sort of plan to keep the scary refugees out Some plans would allow Christian refugees in because no one ever killed in the name of Christianity right but all would
