minumum for supporting innocence or guilt a world in which 12 Angry Men doesn t even get past the first ballot One can make a good case that the candidates should have been the ones doing the convincing in the months leading up to the caucus but a closed room is a closed room In there where everybody more or less knows each other and must live with each other once they leave a show of hands Democrats or a secret ballot Republicans makes little difference Finally it s a test of enthusiasm The weather in Iowa today may or may not impede turnout Some may be unable to reach caucus meetings while others may not have strong enough feeling for one candidate or against others that braving even mildly inclement weather just isn t worth it Many supporting candidates with no hope of getting past the first ballot may skip it altogether The delegates will go to candidates who stood a chance going in and some perhaps many Iowans may just not care who they are if they aren t the ones they wanted Their part is done at least until November Those leaving Iowa with electoral delegates know how little value those specific delegates ultimately hold Iowa is small state with few electoral votes and little influence if somehow the party nomination comes down to a convention floor vote Momentum is what you take with you or don t Not losing which is to say not finishing with support so low you re grouped with the also rans is all that counts Leaving Iowa in that sense is the ability to leave the ability to continue not merely to New Hampshire or South Carolina but to March when the big states with the big delegate counts go to

continue not merely to New Hampshire or South Carolina but to March when the big states with the big delegate counts go to vote How committed are each of these major party candidates to running How convinced are each of them for their chances of winning even when they ve been polling at 2 for the better or worse part of a year At some point the reality that this thing that they ve been fighting for is just fantasy has to set in They ll fight that too Their enthusiasm must ultimately face that reality and that of their supporters must face it too The end of the their favorite s campaign may to their surprise come as a relief like being fired from a bad job or ending a toxic relationship Candidates and supporters alike gave it an honest effort and maybe lied to themselves to keep things going but relief is always the clearest sign that your enthusiasm had long since given way to something else The test isn t simply a matter of winning or losing it is a matter of knowing why you were there in the first place Daniel Ward Permalink Posted at 2 01 PM Tagged politics iowa iowa caucus 2016 presidential race democrats republicans delegates new hampshire south carolina bernie sanders hillary clinton ted cruz marco rubio donald trump Enthusiasm Jan 23 A Dead Girl Or A Live Boy The big story finding its way out of Newt Gingrich s victory in South Carolina is the debate within the Republican party Somehow Gingrich s victory is being interpreted by some in the media as a lurch to the political Right and a victory for the populist Tea Party over the Washington Wall Street Republican establishment That couldn t be more wrong The Republican party s long pendulum swing to the Right well more to the Right began over fifty years ago with the might makes right politics of Barry Goldwater and the seeds of our current economic disaster sown by Milton Friedman Newt Gingrich is less the rash that that strain of aggressive selfishness has come out in than a shepherd looking for a flock a charlatan telling his marks what they want to hear so they ll give him the power he s always craved That after decades of watching Gingrich in action is the real measure of the man The reason he took so long to rise as the Non Romney of the moment was because that is the image he projects No matter how much he tries to cloak himself in populism he s no more a man of the people than Mitt Romney unless the people are the Washington lobbyists and their clients upon whom Gingrich has depended for his own considerable wealth Gingrich s success last night was less a matter of voters choosing to buy what he s been selling than a rejection of Romney While Newt might want us to credit voters attraction to him

sooner had Washington reopened for business than Cruz made what will surely be the first of many trips to Iowa one he spent bragging about his role in causing so much suffering He isn t shy about it Nor is he coy about running for president in 2016 Why should he When you ve spent so much time and donor money cultivating the persona of political outsider you might as we go ahead and flaunt it Cruz doesn t need credibility He ll gladly tell you how proud he was of the shutdown He ll be telling us all about it for the next two years Well maybe not the whole two years However much anger and desire for instant gratification there may be for him and others like him to tap into there won t be enough eager to see him take a proverbial axe to the Executive Branch to get him past the first round of primaries By early 2016 Ted Cruz will likely have returned to Texas to focus on holding onto his Senate seat also up in 2016 Should he somehow lose that too he ll get his book deals and his guest spots on FOX NEWS just like Rudy Giuliani did This is the game The presidency isn t some solemn duty it s a means to an end the end being wealth luxury and accountability to no one The ends justify the means right Is there any sentiment more childish than that Daniel Ward Permalink Posted at 7 05 PM Tagged joe lhota bill de blasio new york rudy giuliani willie horton lee atwater karl rove ted cruz fox news 2016 presidential race terry mcauliffe ken cuccinelli koch brothers aggressive selfishness instant gratification politics political advertising government shutdown accountability Tea Party ism virginia True Conservatism republicans democrats Child s Play Oct 10 Laughing Matter Denial is how these things start It s the old Kübler Ross model denial followed by anger bargaining depression and acceptance We see something so horrible Kübler Ross was writing about death but it could be any threat and our first reaction is that it s so horrible we must be imagining it We ll do anything to avert our gaze We ll make a joke of it or waste valuable time looking for something anything ridiculous about it So we can make a joke of it Entire industries are built around this including fake news Stupid nonsensical gobbledigook urging us to focus on what liberals like to eat and drink Sure we ll take that How about a nickname for a program we want them to fear Check How about the color of their skin or their foreign sounding middle name Like we even had to ask It makes them look different from us and that makes them easier to fear and hate It s bullying and that after all is what the right wing does best It s what makes them so attractive The left wing has its

d be getting less press than he s getting right now Instead he stayed at home and tweeted his opinions to his friends and or potential scouts Gilmore will probably land a gig offering more opinions on a network like CNN or maybe even a job in the private sector Whatever The night was carefully if not artfully crafted to be a showdown between non politician businesspeople Carly Fiorina and Donald Trump Trump the top seed so long as the primaries feel far away has been typecast as the bad guy the fiendish villain twirling his hair and lobbing insults at everyone else all while throwing up his hands and asking Who me when called for fouling which he does more than seems possible Fiorina on the other hand has been cast as the darling of the tournament the nimble underdog a plausible alternative to the bullying and posturing of The Donald By early debate standards it might have made for great television In the sense that we got to see glimpses of who these people are and something of a trainwreck while we did that was true The thing is listening to the words coming out of their mouths the reality didn t exactly live up to the fantasy the RNC and CNN must have had in mind Trump was surely Trump lashing out at anyone and everyone with insults and blustery interruptions before giving up and sullenly going through the motions just to get to the end of the night Fiorina for her part too surely seemed to be what they wanted brash bold revealing a softer side in discussing her step daughter s fatal addiction to drugs and playing up the wronged woman in defying Trump to insult her face to her face And yet And yet Neither of them actually said much of anything at least not anything factual When asked a straight question both veered off into rehearsed talking points his taking the form of insults and self aggrandization hers taking the form of spouting out number after number with little or no reference and frightening certainty Perhaps the most frighteningly certain moment of the night for her was her gruesome description of the slaughter of a squirming live fetus by Planned Parenthood It was bizarre Nothing in anything written about what Planned Parenthood has done with fetal remains even comes close to suggesting killing a viable fetus outside the womb Batshit crazy is what it was That no one on the stage corrected her was understandable they either want to demonize Planned Parenthood just as much as she does or they want to avoid being painted as defending it That Jake Tapper and the other moderators failed to caution her or anyone else for their exaggerations was pathetic but what else could you expect from a network that takes more pride in staging the debate in front of an airplane than corraling the candidates Seriously years from now video of this one debate will be used in college coursework on media and politics It was a free for all a melee disguised as sport For that reason alone this may have one of the great debates of all time Let politicians talk enough they ll show you who they really are You see it how they answer and most often in how they don t You may not want to see it or accept it but it s there The truth about Trump the villain is that he ll wilt under attacks against him The truth about Fiorina the darling is that she has no fewer qualms about stoking fears and warping the truth than Trump It was all there and you didn t even have to look very hard The fantasy of the Sweet Sixteen in all its meanings is one of promise of the hope that anyone can be a prince or princess for just one night of the dream that anyone has what it takes to win For one night it s great but nights end and so too do fantasies And with that a roundup of seeds 1 through 16 1 Donald Trump He s had an easy schedule and hasn t really been challenged Until now With the falling leaves will come falling poll numbers With the first actual primaries will come protestations that the voters don t deserve him They don t 2 Dr Ben Carson He was flat taking neither opportunities to attack Trump nor bait left in front of him suggesting either that he understands that the other candidates don t see him as a threat and is happy to hold position as they knock each other off or that he really has run out of things to say Regardless of how he may have appeared and sounded on stage it was probably the former 3 Former Governor Jeb Bush Had he only attacked Trump for his lobbying failures and defended his Mexican wife from Trump s insane attacks Bush might have escaped without reminding the world yet again that his brother was one of the worst presidents in American history Instead he doubled down on defending him too Bush wasn t alone in trying to project the pre Obama years as an Eden how else to denigrate a two term Democratic president but he alone among the Republican candidates shares a name even Republican voters associate with failure Jeb may well last long he has the money but he ll never go the distance 4 Senator Ted Cruz Though he again threatens to shut the federal government down and thus scuttle Republican hopes far and wide the moderators somehow forgot that he was the third senator up on the stage That s how good his chances are 5 Governor Scott Walker Using the phrase if you ll let me at a debate does not make anyone seem presidential He failed repeatedly to justify his place on the stage and if he wasn t backed by Koch Brothers money he d be passing time trading insults with George Pataki and Bobby Jindal at Happy Hour 6 Senator Marco Rubio The man most likely to top the Republican ticket came across as sober yet youthful focused yet engaged and somehow more experienced than the words escaping his mouth should have allowed him to appear For the most part he let the others go after Trump and for the most part Trump left him alone 7 Former Governor Mike Huckabee For a man who spent so much of his limited screentime thundering about the importance of civics class you d think he d have jumped on Fiorina s little gaffe about amending the Constitution but it he said nothing For those of you who care Fiorina said you need two thirds of the states to ratify an amendment in this case removing birthright citizenship when in fact it requires three fourths of the states The Equal Rights Amendment for example passed in over two thirds of the states but came up three states short 8 Carly Fiorina Yes if you re running for president you should know this It takes two thirds of both the House and Senate or two thirds of all state legislatures acting in concert to put forth an amendment to then be voted on by all fifty states 9 Governor John Kasich He once again played the role of sane man in a room of crazy people He played it a little too stridently at times but he managed to add credibility to the notion that he could be somebody s vice presidential candidate which is surely his long term goal 10 Senator Rand Paul Yes despite The Donald s early dig Paul actually has been polling higher than Chris Christie Just barely Just listening to him Paul actually came across very well at least relative to those sharing the stage with him From enduring Trump s childish digs at him to explaining how rushing to invade other people s countries such as Iraq can actually make things worse he looked and sounded like a grown up This may explain the deafening silence that greeted his every word The crowd likes a big very explosive offense Senator not a smothering defense 11 Governor Chris Christie He started out the evening with his affable drinking buddy persona He then transitioned to a genuinely touching story about his fears for his wife on 9 11 This was the Chris Christie everybody talks about when they talk about his promise and potential It lasted just long enough to make a lot of people forget how much of a bully he can be and then he reverted to form and reminded them This is a perfect example of a man not knowing when to quit His boasts about what it takes to be a Republican governor in a Democratic state insulted Tom Kean the very long memories of his own state s residents the intelligence of anyone familiar with Northeast politics and Happy Hour debater George Pataki former governor of New York 12 15 George Pataki Rick Santorum Bobby Jindal Lindsey Graham What will these four find to talk about if they make it to the next round 16 Former Republican Debater Governor Jim Gilmore Dreams fade but hey you got here Daniel Ward 1 note Permalink Posted at 8 08 PM Tagged 2016 republican debates jim lindsey graham Sweet Sixteen Aug 10 The Empty Room Don t worry folks Trumpy The Clown isn t going anywhere Whatever blowback Donald Trump might be getting from his Thursday night debate performance and his misogynistic meltdown afterwards the bottom line is that the first Republican primary isn t until January Trump and the rest of the knuckleheads the Republican party offered up on Thursday are all going to hang around as long as they can kiddie table debates be damned Well maybe not Trump not if he finds himself relegated out of prime time What debate viewers could have and should have learned about Donald Trump on Thursday is that he is a bully You might think they should have known that already and if we re being honest his bullying is a huge part of what makes him so popular with the right wing base Really who doesn t love watching a loud mouthed jerk tear into other people As long as he s directing his bile at some kind of them and not us that s just entertainment Of course Thursday night Trump turned that bile against the one person he shouldn t have one of Fox News pretty blonde anchors The audience in Cleveland chuckled when Trump said he only attacked Rosie O Donnell She is vocally left wing not physically attractive and notably for the right wing a lesbian This is pretty much the exact opposite of Fox News Megyn Kelly who has gotten a free pass on stating some pretty astounding bullshit through the years primarily because she is what so many of Fox News audience want the fantasy of a woman they can either be or have This of course was Trump s mistake Had he reserved his vindictiveness to follow one of the two male moderators questions Trump would not be facing the backlash he has faced over the past few days And yet he chose Kelly for the same reason he chose O Donnell because she is a woman In Trump s mind and if we re being honest the other men on the stage with him women are weak They do not lead they follow He has spent decades surrounding himself with women who fit that mold He may claim to be attracted to strong independent women but his actions when faced with them constantly put the lie to that Bully that he is Trump is genuinely threatened by them Watching his thinly veiled threats that he would no longer be nice to Kelly as if he had been it takes little imagination to think how he would handle Hillary Clinton in a general election The thing is little imagination is exactly what Trump was hoping he would get with the Republican voters watching on Thursday Why else try to bully them too Lost in the furor over his vindictive attacks on Kelly was his nake threat to undermine whomever Republicans might choose if not him It was the very first thing he said Had he left it at that Trump might have gotten away with nothing more than a tongue lashing from Senator Rand Paul which is to say nothing at all No one cared The 16 Others as his campaign might have called them all would have tried to make something out of it but without a pretty face to put to the threat they all would have failed What will happen next is this Donald Trump will keep doubling down both on standing by what he said and insisting that what he said was taken out of context or deliberately misinterpreted by someone out to get him This folks is the Donald s pattern He ll hope it will go away as it has just about every other time Seriously who s talking about John McCain War Hero now About as many as are talking about his threat to undermine the Republican nominee Having given Fox News all of the ammunition it ever needed Trump will find himself plummeting in the polls Since Fox News basically owns the Republican debates Trump will find himself out of the top ten and facing the choice of sharing a stage in an empty room with former governors Geroge Pataki and Jim Gilmore Jim Gilmore or finding a stage all his own complete with store bought supporters and his name in golden letters Donald Trump won t get what he claims he wants the Republican nomination but he ll at least get to leave on his own demanding terms The guy likely to get what Trump wants by the way is Florida Senator Marco Rubio His combover not Trump s will likely grace the stage in Cleveland when Fox News coronates the Republican nominee next year Rubio has reinvented himself yet again this time as the Republican Party s version of Barack Obama the candidate not the president Rubio has smoothed out his own rough vaguely ethnic edges as well as his hair He may talk Latino but only in the safe white washed tones of the Washington establishment Fox News was created to protect However ironic it may seem that Rubio would emulate the man he desperately needs to criticize in order to win it makes perfect sense because the Obama brand is a proven winner Of course every Obama needs a Biden and Rubio may have found his in Ohio Governor John Kasich If he somehow isn t bumped in favor of Carly Fiorina Fox News early debate favorite Kasich could make the case for a Florida Ohio ticket something the Republican establishment surely has wet dreams about Beyond these three men there really wasn t any sense in paying much attention to the remaining wannabes sharing the stage with them Jeb Bush comes across as less charismatic and at times somehow even less competant than his brother People may end up forgetting him before they forget his name Scott Walker comes across like the sadistic frat brother who really enjoys hazing pledges what he s done in Wisconsin may endear him to corporations but it won t even get him half consideration for Vice President Chris Christie wants to punch everybody EVERYBODY Rand Paul will make strong important points about the military industrial complex and corporate money in politics but no one will forget his own hypocrisy about being a so called libertarian or his hair because Republican voters are shallow like that Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz are jokes They stick around by throwing poo at the wall Poo tends not to stick past New Hampshire Ben Carson is no joke He s scary a sincere religious zealot with as little imagination as Trump was hoping to find in his audience Carly Fiorina is a woman something Fox News desperately wants in the top tier debates if only to have an answer to Hillary Clinton Unfortunately aside from hacking away at Trump and anyone named Clinton Fiorina actual policy positions are even more corporate friendly than Trump s which is saying something Her time in prime time will be short The others governors Pataki Gilmore Rick Perry Bobby Jindal and senators Rick Santorum and Lindsay Graham all suffer from the delusion that their coverage will ever not be grouped with others Of them only Graham managed to stand out stating that climate change is a real thing in a Republican debate but tempering it by insisting that invading Iraq is something we should do again Yup Frankly it s a wonder any of them think they belong in a conversation about the presidency let alone the White House but such is the ego driven world of presidential politics It s worth noting that last Thursday the day of the Republican debates was August 6th the 70th anniversary of dropping the world s first atom bomb on Hiroshima Japan It was also the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act something never more relevant coming just days before the first anniversary of the killing of Mike Brown in Ferguson Missouri Fox News and the 17 Republicans they gathered had hours to discuss these three important anniversaries all of which continue to impact the lives of all Americans Not one of these issues was mentioned let alone discussed It may be that Republican voters don t want to hear about them It may be that TV viewers
