reducing waste which is to say wasting their money on things that don t help them There is a lot of government waste much of it tied up in expenditures tacked onto bills by the very same politicians crying about shrinking things What they mean when they say it however is reducing government s ability to function Blocking federal judicial nominees makes it harder to sustain prosecutions and possibly more important civil cases because cases languish for years Blocking executive branch nominations makes it harder for government to oversee those oh so intrusive laws that they pass the ones meant to police banks and toxic waste disposal Obama s nominees have waited longer than anyone else s even if they are confirmed so yes if the Republicans want to sit on their hands and drag their feet they can Of course Just because we can is hardly the sort of slogan you want to run with in an election year at least not in a country where you aren t guaranteed 99 of the vote with a few abstentions It s certainly not something you want to trot out in a presidential election year in this country not that that will stop them from trying The statements made by Republican presidential candidates in the hours after Scalia s death was announced were pretty laughable each assuring the American public that the next president should get to make the decision by which they shamelessly meant themselves Still none of them can hold a candle to the man who has already stated with utter certainty that he will give that next Republican president that opportunity Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stated that he will not allow a vote on a nominee until the next president takes office because the American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice No really that was his press release You can t make this stuff up He or his staff wrote that with a straight face The man currently working in the Oval Office the same President Obama who is currently in his eighth year of waiting for nominees to get a vote probably doesn t think it s that funny Of course he doesn t have to Give it a couple of weeks Timing on something like this is important There will be the pageantry of a state funeral filled with praise and bipartisan good will or something like it This will be followed after a week or so by the more humble pageantry of the official nomination At that point Obama has them or could if he understands the hand he s been dealt not by Scalia s passing but by the Republicans foolish arrogance The second McConnell declared that he would not allow Obama a sitting president to select his own nominee he set the table for how the Republicans might just lose even more than the presidency From the moment Obama introduces his choice Democratic candidates

of whom actually did began selling indulgences for just about anything The official job title after all was pardoner No confession No problem A mortal sin Buy two Buy a hundred Buy the most expensive ones you can find They were selling Get Out Of Jail Free cards and seemed to be keeping many of the proceeds for themselves At this point it didn t matter whether the pardoners were misrepresenting what an indulgence was supposed to be able to do or whether the Church claimed responsibility or not the sales were being made in its name and some of the money was going into building opulent churches If there was a perception among the poor and the not so poor that the rich could buy their way out of Purgatory or even Hell it was because there already was a sense that the law be it in Heaven or on Earth did not apply equally Martin Luther among others had seen enough His criticism or as he saw it suggestions for reform gained traction The moral high ground had been ceded Understandably having much to lose by listening the Roman Curia aka Church management did their best to shut him up And the rest is very much history Within a decade of Luther nailing his suggestions to the chapel in Wittenberg the Church had lost most of its followers in the region to Lutheran services A decade after that an emboldened Henry VIII killed their monopoly in England seizing their assets for himself Why bring all of this up aside from it being Christmas The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited aka HSBC It s come a long way from its beginnings as an enabler for colonial trade in India and China As you can attest by seeing one of their ATM s on every other corner and one of their ads every hour on TV they are now one of the biggest banks in the world They are also if we are to believe the United States Department of Justice one of the most corrupt Two weeks ago they agreed to a deferred prosecution agreement DPA and a fine of just over 1 9 billion which many have noted is a record fine for a bank They were caught laundering money for Mexican drug cartels and enabling transactions for just about every country the United States holds sanctions against Maybe you don t think the sanctions thing is a big deal they are a British bank after all but they do an enormous amount of business in the United States taking in far more than 1 9 billion and oh yes the drug cartels there s just no excuse for that It is quite literally in some cases blood money So what they heck is a DPA It means that HSBC has to reform restructuring its compliance department into something that understands what the word means and that will provide proper oversight of those naughty bankers who might

we require reminding media outlets of how little legislation was actually passed during his tenure Do Nothing Congress barely even does it justice The way Boehner is leaving now betrays his true weakness By his own admission he had been grooming former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor to follow him Cantor himself is unavailable because he lost his last primary to a Tea Party favorite Cantor had built his own power base by courting the very right wing fervor that ended up consuming him Such was Boehner s judgment in who should follow him The man likely to do so Californian Kevin McCarthy is lesser known than Cantor but no less in the good graces of the Far Right and just as likely to throw Republican legislative gridlock in the face of a Democratic chief executive whomever the next one may be The problem here isn t a dearth of evidence supporting the idea that the House Republicans and many of their Senate comrades are ignoring the needs of actual Americans in the name of ideological purity and campaign contributions it s that the news media that Americans rely on and trust to report this evidence has been so incompetent in doing so and for so very long We bestow upon news media the kind of authority we bestow upon doctors and law enforcement They enjoy a sense of infallibility the absurd faith based fantasy that what they report is gospel FOX NEWS has built its entire operation on this deference to authority and Republicans such as soon to be former Speaker Boehner have flourished because of it We give the news media a place in our homes that we give nothing else short of religion We do take almost everything they state as fact When they fail to get the facts right which they do more when they ask questions less we often give them a pass We shouldn t Obviously we shouldn t That we do as often as we do speaks to our need for them to be right They are alas only human How they report on Boehner and others reflects their need for the system to work for leaders to lead and for the game of politics to be played in good faith We would be fools to believe it could be the news media would have to be fools to believe it too Daniel Ward 4 notes wink and a nod fatcats in back rooms smoking cigars and hatching deals It s comforting to think of it that way It gives it some distance a cartoon y sense of nostalgia that places it far away from each of our lives The reality of corruption of course is far different We seem to see nothing but corruption in the news Poor trusting Chris Christie seems to have surrounded himself with bullies and manipulators applying pressure to reshape New Jersey to their liking Bob McDonnell until a just a couple of weeks ago Governor of Virginia was indicted along with his wife for accepting favors what in those old movies they called graft Both of these men were once considered top prospects for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination Now one s looking at the inside of a jail cell and the other may not be too far behind They have their defenders stalwart jackasses eager to put their faces in front of the cameras and attack those who dare accuse Why did they wait they ask If what these men and women did was so wrong why not accuse them when they did it These questions were asked about Hoboken s mayor Dawn Zimmer the inference being that because she is a Democrat accusing a Republican administration and waited until two other accusations had been made she must be lying she must be inventing a scandal to undermine a political opponent What does it say about the mind of someone who thinks that way who believes that a partisan conspiracy of false accusations is not only a credible defense for the accused but a natural part of politics This is the very heart of corruption It may take many forms bullying graft catastophic chemical leakage institutional cover ups of criminal behavior stolen elections but that s only because it will take whatever form we allow it That it exists at all is due to lowered and lost standards of behavior That is after all what the word means We all know which is to say like to believe that rules and laws are meant to apply equally that the standard of behavior for the highest paid and most powerful must be equal to that for the lowest paid and least powerful That is how groups survive As long as the group holds each member to a standard that preserves the welfare of the group as a whole it works When we look at corruption in local and state politics as we are seeing in New Jersey and Virginia it comes from our own lowered expectations of what that standard can be Without those lowered expectations it could not even fester let alone thrive When we look at Washington and lament at obstructionism and the dismantling of the regulations and

look I have defended your honor and we have defied them together And then there was Iran fresh off diplomatically relieved sanctions and a prisoner swap capturing American sailors in their waters It wasn t the humiliating shots of the sailors on their knees that told the story they wanted to tell it was the haul of automatic and semi automatic weapons To Americans the tracking shots down the spread of guns looked pretty pathetic certainly following the shots of the sailors but we must remember that without the guns the sailors were just men With the guns they were shown to be disarmed emasculated men If you want to send a message to people who might doubt your right to power make it one that you stand with them as equals to a dominant power if you re going to do that emasculation is definitely the way to go Even Barack Obama soon to be former President of The United States couldn t resist a little passive aggressive emasculation on his way out the door Not that newly christened House Speaker needed an excuse to sit on his hands and practice his poker face he bragged about it openly but listening to Obama pepper his last State Of The Union with expressions such as constructive approach and bipartisan when he spoke of what he hoped Congress could do with the next president can only have been taken one way whatever you didn t like about the last eight years was the Republicans fault To be fair it mostly was Anyone sorely disappointed in Obama surely understood what he meant and approved At the same time it must have been hard for many of them to forget the many many opportunities he s had in the past seven years to say so openly and clearly opportunities he chose not to use He was hired to do a job and let them stop him from doing it Republican obstructionism was in many ways Obama s failure in no way more than his failure to call them out on it early and often Obama s State Of The Union was filled with inspiration and some genuinely good ideas about how to move forward but they all have been This one as you would expect was more about how he will be remembered He has that luxury However he is used now and in 2020 Obama has won two more presidential elections than any of his potential successors Lost in Donald Trump and Chris Christie s belabored defenses of New York and its Conservative bona fides is the more or less obvious fact that Trump wasn t Cruz intended target By now Cruz has set his sights on the Rupublican nomination acting as the front runner not as Trump s rival He expects Trump to fade or maybe even crash and burn It s Hillary Clinton he wants people to think he expects to have to beat and voters who hate her are those he courts now The only thing standing in Cruz way Sarah Palin OK not really but see if you can pick out the symphony of dog whistles in her Trump endorsement speech Daniel Ward Permalink Posted at 11 40 PM Tagged dog whistle politics ted cruz Donald Trump politics 2016 presidential race It Safe It s hard to know what to make of Obama s State Of The Union speech last night Ok it s actually very easy Last night we were watching if we were watching at all the first of two meaningless State Of The Union speeches given by a term limited second term president just past the second mid term with no more elections left He even said as much Past his second mid term the phrase refers to the president not congress a president has little clout and has absolutely none when congress is held by the opposing party So no there was no mystery here Everything he did and said was as predictable as it was likely to be rejected by the Republicans sitting impatiently on their hands in the House pews The only thing approaching mystery and again there really wasn t any mystery to it was where this seemingly bold and brave man was the past six years He made a few appearances on the 2012 campaign trail but the rest of the time he was up on a shelf somewhere collecting dust The Barack Obama of 2009 2014 went out of his way to avoid open conflict in Washington Deny it as he might he went out of his way to compromise with bullies and was rewarded for that folly with complaints from those very same bullies that he wouldn t compromise enough Which is what bullies do when you try to compromise Obama has been an extraordinarily weak president as a result His one lasting triumph for now has been a healthcare act lacking the one thing a public option to compete with corporately owned healthcare insurers that would have made possible the two things it was supposed to be doing lowering insurance costs and broadening coverage The Affordable Care Act does neither well requiring millions in subsidies in each state to make up the difference for the lack of
