    was born in Brogue Lane in Ireland in 1920 He received his primary education at Strand Road School and started his first job at age 14 as a driver s helper with the Shell Oil Company in Tralee He continued to take odd jobs and took evening classes at a technical school in Moyderwell at age 16 before immigrating to England at age 20 Though he worked both in construction and as a long distance lorry driver for several years in 1948 he joined the English province of the Jesuits as a lay brother His one and only mission abroad as a Jesuit was to Rhodesia Zimbabwe where he worked at Saint Paul s Mission in Musami from 1954 1977 It is said that he built the mission by himself he not only built a school and a house but he also served as a doctor preacher and even the mission s lorry driver During his time there the mission grew from nothing to a mission of 2 000 people with a primary school a secondary school a farm a hospital and a social center On February 6 1977 nationalist guerrillas arrived at the mission rounded up the white staff which also included five Dominican sisters and took them a short distance away In the words of Father Dunstan Myerscough a priest who survived by throwing himself to the ground when the shooting began Finally three of them turned on us and raised their guns we didn t know they were going to shoot us until the firing started when the firing stopped I looked up and saw that the other seven were dead and that there was nothing I could do for them Brother John Conway was 57 years of age when he was killed Sources http www independent

    El Salvador Jesuit Martyrs of El Salvador Learn More Joao Bosco Penido Burnier S J 1976 Brazil Facebook 0 Google 0 Linkedin 0 Twitter 0 Father Joao Bosco Penido Burnier was born on June 11 1917 in Juiz de Fora in Mato Grosso Brazil as the fifth of nine children He attended the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome graduated with a degree in theology and was ordained a priest there in 1946 He returned home as the Assistant for Latin America in the Society of Jesus In 1954 he was appointed the vice provincial of the province of Goiás Minas Gerais and Espíritu Santo From 1959 to 1965 he held the position of novice master and spiritual director He served as a strong advocate for the rights of indigenous populations as a member on the Indigenous Missionary Council CIM a partner organization of the Brazilian Conference of Catholic Bishops He even worked as a missionary in Diamond in Minas Gerais working with the local Bakairi and Xavante people Much of his work took place during the military dictatorship in Brazil 1964 1985 and it was at the height of the dictatorship that Father Burnier lost his life On October 11 1976 Father Burnier was returning from a meeting in Santa Terezinha with Dom Pedro Casaldáliga when he learned of the ongoing abuse of two women by police officers in the police station in Ribeirão Cascalheira He rushed to their aid and attempted to mediate with the local authorities However when he attempted to do so one of the police officers hit Father Burnier pistol whipped him and shot him in the neck The next day October 12 Father Burnier died in the neurological center in Goiania Sources http www prelaziasaofelixdoaraguaia org br historia 20de 20joao 20bosco 20burnier htm http www

    and Education Resources DONATE Search Alban de Jerphanion S J 1976 Lebanon You are here Home Jesuit Martyrs of El Salvador Jesuit Martyrs of El Salvador Learn More Alban de Jerphanion S J 1976 Lebanon Facebook 0 Google 0 Linkedin 0 Twitter 0 Father Alban de Jerphanion entered the Province of the Near East in the Society of Jesus early in his life beginning a career as a university professor and educator as a literature teacher at Saint Joseph College in Beirut Lebanon at the age of 21 He later became the director of the College from 1934 1945 the director of the medical department the director of the engineering department and even the president of the College from 1958 1965 He also served as the director of the Club of Catholic Youth a group of socially active educated young people in Lebanon in addition to serving as a member of the board of the Jesuit Press or the Catholic Press His position as the head of the Collège Notre Dame de Jamhour located near Beirut turned out to be his last On March 14 1976 at the height of the Lebanese civil war Father de Jerphanion accompanied a severely injured and paralyzed friend and fellow Jesuit to the airport where his friend hoped to fly to France and undergo an important surgical procedure However before they arrived at the airport they were stopped at a checkpoint where the driver of the car and the school nurse who were accompanying the two Jesuits were taken hostage Father de Jerphanion instead of walking back to his school as the soldiers ordered left his friend on the sidewalk and walked two kilometers to a nearby convent to seek help When he returned to the checkpoint to find his friend he was shot
