  • Laudato Si: An Invitation to Solidarity
plan and a call to community conversion A Call to the Youth Francis makes some intentional calls to young people throughout the document First early in the document he notes that it is intended not just as an invitation to Catholics but to all people across the globe This will resonate with millennials whom studies have shown are becoming less and less likely to affiliate with an established religion even if they themselves identify as Catholic He emphasizes a respect for diversity of culture a concept that young people see as the standard operating procedure in the world today He also offers some challenging messages to this generation questioning the overwhelming role of technology in life and the impacts it has on relationship building and critiquing the overarching individualism that exists in society today often associated with younger demographics In addition Francis notes the impact of our choices in caring for creation will have on future generations In other words our actions today will influence the reality of young people tomorrow See also Kerry Weber s article in America Magazine entitled Why Lautado Si is the perfect encyclical for Millenials Making It Practical Pope Francis offers a myriad of practical examples some more direct than others of ways that individuals as well as institutions and even business can respond to what he describes as an urgent need for us to move forward in a bold cultural revolution These ideas range from recycling and praising God through mealtime prayers to the enforcement of environmental legislation and significant incorporation of diverse voices including the marginalized in business leaders decisions The average person can easily pick out at least one way they can put this document into action right now See also Catholic News Service article entitled What to do The Pope s Practical Tips for Helping the Environment You can find resources on how to begin responding to Pope Francis s encyclical here Facebook 103 Google 0 Linkedin 0 Twitter 103 Tags environment Papal Encyclical Pope Francis http ignatiansolidarity net wp content uploads 2015 06 504 png 504 504 Christopher Kerr http ignatiansolidarity net wp content uploads 2013 04 ISN Color Transparent Large png Christopher Kerr 2015 06 18 11 25 50 2015 06 18 17 03 12 Laudato Si An Invitation to Solidarity You might also like Easter Sunday Christ Rose Within Me Tied in a Single Garment Day 26 Finding Hope in Earth PODCAST Chris Lowney on Pope Francis Why He Leads the Way He Leads US Bishops on Pope at Border See Our Brothers and Sisters as Fellow Pilgrims Day 33 Celebrate Change Prepare Pope Francis Romero s Beatification is a Cause for Great Joy for the Salvadoran People Day 40 What Does Your Palm Branch Mean 2 replies Trackbacks Pingbacks Pope Francis Releases Video Calling to Care for Creation Ignatian Solidarity Network says February 5 2016 at 1 38 pm Tomás Insua the global coordinator of the Global Catholic Climate Movement GCCM which is a partner of the

of The Crux offers some thoughts on the impacts of the leak There has been a lot of controversy swirling around this Media outlets have made different choices about why they did or did not report on the leaked copy Allen predicts the leak will be the energy People do love controversy JohnLAllenJr The encyclical leak frenzy probably will boost interest in Thursday s official presentation http t co BiXBygEGbG Crux Crux June 17 2015 2 A number of Catholic and secular news outlets have offered extensive analysis of a recent survey by Pew Research on Catholic beliefs on global warming National Catholic Reporter offers some good analysis on the breakdowns from a variety of angles The basic gist according to the Pew poll About 70 of Catholics believe the Earth is warming but fewer than half believe it is caused by humans or a serious problem Yikes How will Pope Francis s encyclical encourage people to reflect more deeply on these points Stay tuned A new pewresearch survey says 71 of Catholics believe in global warming http t co kM12VcbFPg 68 of the general public agrees NCR NCRonline June 16 2015 3 This is one of those articles where the Catholic politicians illustrate how much of a best kept secret Catholic Social Teaching really is This is not limited to one political party this article just happened to focus on the Republican party so they quoted Jeb Bush who said But I think religion ought to be about making us better as people and less about things that end up getting in the political realm Not sure how that really works How can we be better people if we are making choices as individuals communities and countries that are harming the Earth and people who reside in it Doesn t the Gospel imperative of our faith call us to be analyzing how our faith impacts our brothers and sisters Pope s views on climate change add pressure to Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio http t co NCAdcHZHTq pic twitter com z3SxuyWQQt The New York Times nytimes June 17 2015 4 Pope Francis gives us a reminder about how to take in the encyclical DO s 1 Open heart 2 Open mind 3 Concern for our brothers and sisters DON T s Anything that deviates from the above Read encyclical on care for creation with open heart pope asks http t co bSLdb8ozOW pic twitter com WaXa7ypCj3 Catholic News Svc CatholicNewsSvc June 17 2015 5 I am not sure if RNS was trying to do a play on words with the word hot but I like it even if it was unintentional Clearly they were a media outlet who chose to report on the leaked version They actually highlight coverage from a variety of Catholic news sources A collective leak if you will If you like knowing the score before you watch the game on TIVO then this one is for you Hot quotes on global warming from unofficial draft

  • Encyclical on Climate Change: We Need More Than a Superhero Pope
Change We Need More Than a Superhero Pope Encyclical on Climate Change We Need More Than a Superhero Pope June 15 2015 1 Comment in Environment Voices for Justice by Christopher Kerr Facebook 27 Google 0 Linkedin 0 Twitter 27 In our age of social media and viral video one can t be surprised by Observatório do Clima s mock trailer illustrating Pope Francis as a karate chopping enemy fighting superhero preparing to release an encyclical to fight evil environmental doers It s fun And based on how Pope Francis rolls I have no doubt that he will take on detractors with quips that hit like karate chops However we need more than a Superhero Pope This is one of those times where a team of one even when that one is a Pope won t cut it I think the person who knows this best is Pope Francis What we will see on Thursday is not an attempt to win the fight as the trailer depicts it on his own but instead an invitation to us all to be part of the struggle An invitation to respond to a grave reality we have collectively created for our home to solidarity with our brothers and sisters to a deeper relationship with God I am excited for the potential of this invitation for the potential of our Church and for the potential of our global community This potential will rise as each of us responds to Francis s invitation to be people of solidarity caring for our home Facebook 27 Google 0 Linkedin 0 Twitter 27 Tags environment Papal Encyclical Pope Francis http ignatiansolidarity net wp content uploads 2015 06 pope trailer png 549 548 Christopher Kerr http ignatiansolidarity net wp content uploads 2013 04 ISN Color Transparent Large png Christopher Kerr 2015 06 15 13 22 38 2015 06 15 13 29 43 Encyclical on Climate Change We Need More Than a Superhero Pope You might also like Good Friday It s Good Friday but I Have a Bad Memory Pope Francis s Easter Message Use Weapons of Love Climate Change Jesuit Higher Education Reportback from Loyola Chicago 4 Loyola University Chicago Celebrates Laudato Si with Environmental Event Congressman Gosar Join Us Listen Pope Francis Pope Francis Pope Francis 1 reply Bob Waldrop says June 18 2015 at 5 28 am How Catholics can respond to Laudato Si A Catholic Worker approach http www justpeace org laudato pdf Reply Leave a Reply Want to join the discussion Feel free to contribute Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Comment Name Email Website Receive ISN Updates Action Alerts Email Address First Name Issue Interests Environmental Justice Fair Trade Immigration Domestic Poverty Worker Rights Human Rights in Latin America From the ISN Blogs Nicaragua The Irony of Electric Trees April 19 2016 11 58 am DACA DAPA I stand with my brothers and sisters who are undocumented today April 18 2016 10 42
