  • CSA Newsletter – Week #2 | Green Gate Farms
more to come later on Saturday 15 members of the UT Slow Food and OxFam chapters volunteered here and on Sunday the anchor and producer of CBS Early Morning Show spent three hours profiling our farm for its coverage of 25th Farm Aid Anniversary Not every day does a national network show up at your gate so we rushed around to make the place presentable by farm standards that is Anchor Betty Nuygen a UT grad will feature the farm and her interview with Willie Nelson on Friday during the 7 8 a m hour We don t own a TV but the piece will also air on its website and possibly YouTube Three hours of interviewing gets edited down to three minutes but we re excited to share the challenges and benefits of local sustainable farming to 3 million viewers With cool weather approaching and days getting shorter the fields are transitioning from summer to winter crops We spent the past two months planting frost intolerant vegetables such as tomatoes beans potatoes eggplant and peppers Recently we ve switched to cold tolerant ones cucumbers broccoli cabbage kale carrots swiss chard onions and garlic greens and lettuce Both types will overlap through mid November or until the first hard frost That means for quantity and diversity your shares will get bigger by weeks four or five and peak about week eight or nine Farming is not an exact science and in Central Texas it often seems more like theater and arts but we are pleased so far with how the season is shaping up Farm News and Events This week share is bountiful thanks to the rain and includes Summer squash and zucinni Eggplant Sweet and hot peppers Okra Basil Cucumber Bunch of Arugula or Swiss Chard Elephant Garlic Staffer
