  • One thing leads to the next | Green Gate Farms
Which reminds me you must read The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert Her wonderful book immerses you in the forgotten world of 19th century scientists and gardeners on the cusp of Darwin s theory of natural selection Makes me long to meet someone as intrepid brilliant and determined as her Alma Researching Alma leads me to discover the likes of botannical illustrator Marianne North and Gertrude Jekyll one of the most influential garden designers of the 20th century Jekyll yes of Jekyll and Hyde fame created nearly 400 gardens across Britain Europe and the United States Who knew Finding accounts of women who succeeded long ago is deeply satisfying to me given how much of what I ve been taught is limited to the achievements of men I also love how one passion gardens can lead to the creation of another vases For instance see how Gertrude s great great granddaughter has restored her legacy by reintroducing vases she designed 100 years ago www gertrudejekylldesigns com Flower growing and arranging does inevitably lead to what to put the darn things in Should it be a showy ornate vessel there s that majolica again Or a plain thing that does not distract Each week s Flower CSA bouquet is given to you in a red cup full of water We do this so the stems are fat and juicy and easily transported in your car s cupholder But does this work Should we just bundle them like other flower growers do What do you prefer About Green Gate Farms View all posts by Green Gate Farms Camp Flowers End of the Row for Austin s Last Tractor Dealership No comments yet Leave a Reply Click here to cancel reply Comment Name required Email will not be published required Website

the colors and types of flowers her customers require I collected what was blooming Since I tend to be drawn to edible scents and color I reached for the fennel and its dreamy licorice flavor Added some pyrethrum which are the workhorses of the farm These tiny daisies are one of the few bug repellants organic farmers like us can use then we moved on to these fuchsia dianthus Yes they re garish showgirls but they taste great and they ve dug in becoming perennials where other flowers just crumple No bouquet is complete without texture and shape Who can resist a garlic scape Or the snowball puff of an onion scape The florist professional inquired about filler In her industry it s usually nondescript greenery used to add volume to a bouquet On the farm it often involves something edible and fragrant like basils And I couldn t resist popping in a few grasses because I like the way they bounce Viola we were done My thoroughly unprofessional mostly edible organic bouquet left the floral expert shaking her head Where were the long stem roses and calla lilies Customers want what they see in Martha Stewart and Brides magazines she explained with authority I nodded and smiled and silently gave thanks for our Flower Share members who support what grows in Austin not in Ecuador About Green Gate Farms View all posts by Green Gate Farms Growing Farmer Jamie Old School Squash No comments yet Leave a Reply Click here to cancel reply Comment Name required Email will not be published required Website Make A Donation Fundraising Websites Crowdrise Become A Farm Supporter First Name Last Name Email Address Photos on flick r Helpful Links Join the Meat CSA Manage Your Meat CSA Account Join the 2016 Spring Summer

  • Flower Field Update: Scrounging in May | Green Gate Farms
is still in the forecast However rain has been part of our problem this season Though these lovely daisies pyrethrum are finally beginning to pop the other blooms are stalled Celosia and marigold are on the cusp The dozens of sunflowers that I forced weeks ago as a back up plan to avoid this exact situation have not cooperated What s a farmer to do Scrounge There is the prolific pineapple guava near the farmhouse loaded with tasty blooms It has design possibilities The salvia is looking good but there isn t enough for all of us yet And while I LOVE alliums scapes I m not sure if you do Folks don t say it but I suspect they feel cheated if their bouquet doesn t feature colorful petals So I continue to scrounge for more color The spiky vervain is fun so we play with that to see what we come up with But the flowers are not cooperating For some reason the daisies are failing within a few hours of cutting This looks like a weedy mess Maybe an eye catching vase will solve the problem Nope While I love this white birch vase discovered at a potters shop in Maine I m just not feeling it Time to start over About Green Gate Farms View all posts by Green Gate Farms Edible Bouquet Flower CSA Week 3 April 28 Yarrow Shallots and Garlic Week 5 Flower CSA Firewheels and Mexican Hats No comments yet Leave a Reply Click here to cancel reply Comment Name required Email will not be published required Website Make A Donation Fundraising Websites Crowdrise Become A Farm Supporter First Name Last Name Email Address Photos on flick r Helpful Links Join the Meat CSA Manage Your Meat CSA Account Join the 2016
