  • Technology Planning Web Hosting This blog is maintained by Ty Duncan Coordinator Accountability and Compliance Services 806 281 5832 Like us on Facebook Follow InstructionalLe Instructional Leaders Things I Learned Practicing TTESS Appraisal Apr 16 2016 09 59 00 pm Our team was given the opportunity to spend the day working through the TTESS rubric with teachers at Shallowater and Abernathy Elementary recently We were able to do a pre conference and conduct the formal observation and work in inter rater reliability with campus principals We thank them for their time We got better working on this with them One of the consistent messages we have heard from pilots is the increased dialogue it has created on the campus around instruction I was able to have an instructional conversation around a lesson with a rubric for a teacher I had met that very day A common vocabulary around instructional practice makes the conversation easier for everyone on the sophistication spectrum that prevails in most campuses Teachers must know the rubric to be successful Our team worked with some great teachers They could speak the rubric in the pre conference and understand how they needed to align their work to get to the top levels of the rubric These teachers had obviously studied the aspects of the rubric in which they felt needed growth and worked to enhance the quality of these areas Teachers who know the rubric and use it appropriately will get better It encourages best practice Teachers who lecture for 45 minutes straight will not do well in this rubric We also agree that based on what we know about the research that is not best practice either The rubric demands parts of our practice that are missing in huge quantities like formative assessment and student ownership of learning These things take planning and systems to be in place and require a reflective practitioner Who can argue that is not what is best for kids Here is an example below As a relatively new teacher I find the TTESS program very helpful If done correctly it lets us know exactly where we can improve Last year in my formal observation I needed improvement in integrating cross curricular instruction 3rd grade math science I have used that feedback PD opportunities offered at ESC 17 and a lot of creative effort to improve in this area Similar to students we can only improve where we know we are falling short My administrators have used TTESS as a tool to help me get better not simply as a performance appraisal for documentation They have used TTESS as a framework for communicating goals for improvement In my opinion feedback from administration is everything Ollie Hart 4 th Grade Teacher Abernathy Elementary There will be naysayers those are comfortable with the status quo and their practice and those who simply do not want to be lead TTESS will help leaders improve the quality of their leadership and create a system in which every
