t actually sick or incapacitated or mentally handicapped in any way although that was not to imply that any of these conditions were inferior to what some people called health Thus Red Riding Hood felt that she could get behind the idea of delivering the basket to her grandmother and so she set off Many people believed that the forest was a foreboding and dangerous place but Red Riding Hood knew that this was an irrational fear based on cultural paradigms instilled by a patriarchal society that regarded the natural world as an exploitable resource and hence believed that natural predators were in fact intolerable competitors Other people avoided the woods for fear of thieves and deviants but Red Riding Hood felt that in a truly classless society all marginalized peoples would be able to come out of the woods and be accepted as valid lifestyle role models On her way to Grandma s house Red Riding Hood passed a woodchopper and wandered off the path in order to examine some flowers She was startled to find herself standing before a Wolf who asked her what was in her basket Red Riding Hood s teacher had warned her never to talk to strangers but she was confident in taking control of her own budding sexuality and chose to dialogue with the Wolf She replied I am taking my Grandmother some healthful snacks in a gesture of solidarity The Wolf said You know my dear it isn t safe for a little girl to walk through these woods alone Red Riding Hood said I find your sexist remark offensive in the extreme but I will ignore it because of your traditional status as an outcast from society the stress of which has caused you to develop an alternative and yet entirely valid world view Now if you ll excuse me I would prefer to be on my way Red Riding Hood returned to the main path and proceeded towards her Grandmother s house But because his status outside society had freed him from slavish adherence to linear Western style thought the Wolf knew of a quicker route to Grandma s house He burst into the house and ate Grandma a course of action affirmative of his nature as a predator Then unhampered by rigid traditionalist gender role notions he put on Grandma s nightclothes crawled under the bedclothes and awaited developments Red Riding Hood entered the cottage and said Grandma I have brought you some cruelty free snacks to salute you in your role of wise and nurturing matriarch The Wolf said softly Come closer child so that I might see you Red Riding Hood said Grandma what big eyes you have You forget that I am optically challenged And Grandma what an enormous what a fine nose you have Naturally I could have had it fixed to help my acting career but I didn t give in to such societal pressures my child And Grandma what very big sharp teeth

  • Christians Together : Micah Sunday - prophetic challenge or cop-out?
widow came and put in two very small copper coins worth only a fraction of a penny Calling his disciples to him Jesus said I tell you the truth this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others They all gave out of their wealth but she out of her poverty put in everything all she had to live on Mark 12 41 44 Note 1 The eradication of poverty is not only unrealistic but is also unbiblical Jesus said that there would always be the poor amongst us Matt 26 11 and the book of Revelation makes it clear that the nearer we get to Jesus return so too will there be an increase in the gap between the rich and the poor Rev 6 6 18 13 Note 2 And at a corporate level how can churches in the West justify spending millions on bigger and finer buildings when others lack even a basic roof over their heads Ed footnote Is there something that Christians Together website could or should do to express God s care and love for the poor and suffering Watchman 21 10 2008 Feedback David Gillan 22 10 2008 10 41 I agree with this we are more interested in our own well being than those around us I personally find it despicable that most modern days Christians would look down on those who dont have a home a car and a job Its a pity those people dont realise that these things are not Christian goals in themselves I worship in a church where people have boats 2 cars holiday home and even one has 6 cars Yet the elderly walk to church in the rain with walking sticks because no one will offer a lift Its disgraceful and at the end of the day it comes down to a failure in our leadership to set an example Dave Colin Johnstone Guest 22 10 2008 12 05 David Gillan s remarks should provoke a few thoughts Take a look round the car park during the service at any evangelical church and you will hardly be hit by symbols of poverty And of course after the service they will all go off and have lunch fellowship in some nice suburban home where no doubt such weighty spiritual matters like jobs promotion foreign holidays new cars new houses and such like will be discussed while tucking into a sumptuous repast Prosperity theology is alive and well The evangelical churches are little more than comfy social clubs for the middle classes Penny Lee 22 10 2008 15 11 I do agree that far too much attention is given to building up wealth and security for oneself However just because someone has a nice home doesn t necessarily mean they are not giving generously to God s work There can never be any excuse for six cars etc or weekly visits to the hairdresser and so on However I really don t believe

  • Christians Together : Christians under pressure
S vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has come under fire for her evangelical Christian beliefs But she is in good company For while Christians in the West have to suffer verbal abuse and sometimes job and other kinds of discrimination Christians in the East have much more to endure In Iran for example where the evangelical house church movement is growing rapidly believers are being arrested harassed and persecuted and

  • Christians Together : Letter from Muslim leaders to the Pope
allowed for a much more aggressive stance So depending on which section of the Koran is being quoted it is very easy to find verses which teach either harmony and peace or alternatively highly threatening attitudes Another major difficulty for Islamic leaders is that there is neither a centralised structure nor a single representative that can claim to speak for Islam Virtually anyone who has the charisma and influence to attract a following can set himself up as an Imam prayer leader in a mosque Added to all of this is the historic and bloody rivalry between the Shia and Sunni sects witnessed in the 1980 1988 war between Iran and Iraq As we know true peace and ultimate peace can only be found in and delivered by the Prince of Peace who is in the line of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob not Ishmael Some say that many Muslims carry a spirit of fatherlessness children of Hagar and that what they seek is a father God To read a full copy of this letter click on the image below Addendum update Subsequent to the above one year later in September 2007 138 Islamic scholars called for reconciliation and peace by way of another open letter entitled A Common Word Between Us and You It was published on the internet and was designed as an open greeting addressed to the leaders of all the world s churches and indeed to all Christians everywhere Now Autumn 2008 an Israel based leader has responded by pointing out the irreconcillable differences between Islam and Christianity Marcel Rebiai was born 1953 in Algeria raised strictly Moslem but as a young man came to know Jesus as his Saviour He is now Director of the Community of Reconciliation COR and has living in Israel since 1994 with his wife and four children With an international teaching ministry he is well acquainted with the world of Islam as well as with the conditions of the body of Christ in Israel and the Western world His article is well worth reading In it the author states Jesus is the only truth about the father making all other confessions of faith meaningless As the door to life Jesus makes all other doors lead to dead ends Jesus is the only source of life which God has given to man For Islam and for every other religion this is a stumbling block an unreasonable claim and an insult From the gospel s standpoint there is no leeway Rebiai is the author of Islam Israel and the Church Feedback Editor 04 11 2008 15 27 While the attention of the world is on the United States presidential election tomorrow Nov 4 2008 the Vatican will be launching a ground breaking initiative on an issue no less momentous for global peace the dialogue between Christianity and Islam Twenty four Muslim leaders and scholars led by Mustafa Ceric the Grand Mufti of Bosnia tomorrow open three days of talks in the Vatican

  • Christians Together : An Age of Hunger - lessons from recent events
of the word of God If the trumpet does not sound a clear note who will prepare for the battle asks the Apostle Paul But if the preachers themselves are uncertain of the message how can they declare it with clarity and conviction Dynamic Power Great preachers like Wesley and Whitfield and leaders of the 18th and 19th century revivals had no such uncertainties But today we are the inheritors of a century of sterile biblical criticism that has robbed preachers of the dynamic power of the gospel the dunamis that powered the Church through the first three centuries of fierce persecution when believers faced martyrdom rather than deny the Name of Jesus The great danger facing us today is that we are about to be plunged into a situation not unlike that of the Early Church fighting for survival in a hostile political and multi religious environment God has been warning us of this for the past 25 years An increasing number of discerning believers have perceived this but the message has not got through to the whole church because so many leaders are still mesmerised by signs and wonders of the kind that came out of the short lived Lakeland Revival Watchmen It is now urgent that Christian leaders learn to be watchmen for the nation to observe what is happening around us and on the international scene to learn how to spread these matters before the Lord in prayer to listen to him and faithfully to declare his word so that the church becomes the prophet to the nation in the testing times that lie ahead This is why I and a small Core Group of leaders have called a meeting to spread the current situation before the Lord and to hear what he is saying See footnotes for details New Message What we expect to hear is not a message of judgment although that is the context of the present situation that is going to intensify But God has been warning us of judgment for many years and we have not listened or paid attention The judgment is now upon us and we are in a similar situation to that of Jeremiah in chapter 32 when his cousin came to him telling him that it was his family obligation to purchase a field in Anathoth on the northern outskirts of Jerusalem The prophet was reluctant to do this because up to now the message he had been instructed to deliver was all about judgment and that disaster would come upon Jerusalem unless there was repentance and turning to the Lord The new situation was that the Babylonians were already encamped around the City their siege ramps were being built up against the walls of Jerusalem The fall of the City could not be long delayed Anathoth was already in enemy hands No one was buying and selling property but Jeremiah saw his cousin s request as a direct word from God For this is what the

being the vehicle for bringing the Gospel to Western culture However they argue that if the Church is to do this it needs to undergo some huge changes we need to change the whole fibre of the church We need revolution not evolution Frost and Hirsch argue for the creation of what they call Missional Churches which are fundamentally different from the traditional Churches I have grown up in Three factors are key to understanding how churches are and how they should be Frost and Hirsch say that traditional churches are attractional dualistic and hierarchical but that they need to be missional messianic and apostolic Attractional versus Missional Frost and Hirsch say that traditional churches create sacred spaces that are fundamentally uncomfortable for not yet christians Then they set about drawing the not yet Christians into those spaces They say that in the attractional church evangelism becomes about inviting people to meetings and this limits our vision for what God can do both in time and in space But Jesus didn t say sit in your church and wait for people to come to you Even when traditional churches set out to be evangelistic Frost and Hirsch suggest that church planting generally involves planting Sunday services rather than real Christian communities The Missional church on the other hand does not seek to attract people to it It seeps into the cracks and crevices of a society in order to be Christ to those who don t know him yet It does this through proximity spaces shared projects and commercial enterprises Proximity spaces are places or events where Christians and not yet Christians can interact meaningfully with each other They are definitely not churches Examples of proximity spaces include art workshops pubs and cafes where Christians form part of the regular clientele Shared projects are activities of genuine interest to the wider community which meet a need and provide an opportunity for Christians and not yet Christians to meet in a natural situation Commercial enterprises are real businesses run by Christians for the wider community but which are not overtly evangelistic Examples included a shoe shop in San Francisco and a pub in Barnsley The point of all of these activities is to find neutral ground where the Church can intentionally meet with the wider world This does not mean that the Church merely becomes a social club Bible teaching and worship are still very much part of the life of the church though perhaps not done in traditional ways as is mutual commitment and accountability Dualistic versus Messianic Frost and Hirsch say that traditional churches are dualistic That is they believe that there is a separation between the secular and the sacred This idea is rooted in Greek philosophy not the Bible Most churches and Christians in the West have bought into this idea so that they do not even question it This distinction impacts all aspects of life We have sacred and secular people clergy and laity sacred and
