struck by the appropriateness of this passage from Habakkuk in relation to the Islamic State that I thought I would ask you all what you thought Note I am not saying that this passage definitely refers to the current situation in Iraq but I m just wondering ISIS could be described as Chaldeans they are certainly impetuous and cruel making use of other translations too nobody can believe their successes they scoff at rulers they deride every stronghold their judgement and their dignity do proceed from themselves as they themselves have said and they have sinned by imputing their power and success to Allah Despite this latter however God says For lo I raise up the Chaldeans so despite the fact that our world leaders have been caught completely off guard and don t know what to do about ISIS the Bible is saying God planned it if the passage does refer to the current situation that is They have also made themselves wealthy to the tune of over 2bn through extortion Their horsemen do come from afar about 500 fighters have gone out from the UK They appear to have been raised up as an instrument of judgement upon the Gentiles Habakkuk is clearly distressed and asks God if He is really going to let this carry on and of course God shows him that the instruments of His judgement shall indeed be judge themselves So what we can learn from this I suppose is that God is in control of evil events as well as the good ones using people with evil intentions to accomplish His purposes even though that wasn t what they wanted Something like this is a judgement on the nations because of sin perhaps an advance warning and encouragement to repent before the real judgements fall The People of God should look to themselves and not assume we don t need correcting Stand in awe and sin not commune with your own heart It s OK to plead with God to have mercy on the world as Habukkuk did Here is the passage from Chapter 1 of Habakkuk with an excerpt from the following chapter too The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see O LORD how long shall I cry and thou wilt not hear even cry out unto thee of violence and thou wilt not save Why dost thou shew me iniquity and cause me to behold grievance for spoiling and violence are before me and there are that raise up strife and contention Therefore the law is slacked and judgment doth never go forth for the wicked doth compass about the righteous therefore wrong judgment proceedeth Behold ye among the heathen and regard and wonder marvellously for I will work a work in your days which ye will not believe though it be told you For lo I raise up the Chaldeans that bitter and hasty nation which shall march through the breadth of the land to possess the dwellingplaces that are not theirs They are terrible and dreadful their judgment and their dignity shall proceed of themselves Their horses also are swifter than the leopards and are more fierce than the evening wolves and their horsemen shall spread themselves and their horsemen shall come from far they shall fly as the eagle that hasteth to eat They shall come all for violence their faces shall sup up as the east wind and they shall gather the captivity as the sand And they shall scoff at the kings and the princes shall be a scorn unto them they shall deride every strong hold for they shall heap dust and take it Then shall his mind change and he shall pass over and offend imputing this his power unto his god Art thou not from everlasting O LORD my God mine Holy One we shall not die O LORD thou hast ordained them for judgment and O mighty God thou hast established them for correction Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil and canst not look on iniquity wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he And makest men as the fishes of the sea as the creeping things that have no ruler over them They take up all of them with the angle they catch them in their net and gather them in their drag therefore they rejoice and are glad Therefore they sacrifice unto their net and burn incense unto their drag because by them their portion is fat and their meat plenteous Shall they therefore empty their net and not spare continually to slay the nations The next chapter goes on Woe to him who piles up stolen goods and makes himself wealthy by extortion How long must this go on Will not your creditors suddenly arise Will they not wake up and make you tremble Then you will become their prey Because you have plundered many nations the peoples who are left will plunder you For you have shed human blood you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them Ed footnote Vivian had submitted her

but not in power It was indeed the case Sadly it is also true of much of the Christian church in the West today The religious structures are still in place but the spiritual authority as in King Saul s final years has departed In the place of preparation But even as Saul s reign was moving to a close God anointed an heir However David was then just a shepherd boy And for a time he had to remain out of sight hidden in a cave until the time of his accession arrived So for a period the nation of Israel was in a rather unsettled position The old while still there was fading but the new had not yet come So too today And yet there will be many just like David who are being groomed by God but for the moment are still waiting in the wings Only time will reveal who they are but there could be a few surprises In the anointing of David as Saul s successor the prophet Samuel confounded David s father and his other sons God chose the youngest of the family with the reminder Man looks at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart He chooses the foolish to shame the wise and the weak to shame the strong Those that God will use are those whose hearts are set on the things of God Kingdom builders rather than empire builders Those who will reject the worldliness that has crept into the church of God Those who will turn away from the idolatry of success as judged by numbers and buildings But if the future is yet unclear what is certain is that the status quo is being dismantled For some impending change may appear threatening In

a liar he was so articulate that he cannot be mad etc but to me they have missed out on a trick they too readily accept that the reported words of Jesus are accurate in the first place Have a look at the religious courses on the website of Academic Earth and track the interpretation of important aspects of of the bible courtesy of world class scholars and lecturers Look at religion in the round and surprise yourself Then enjoy the release Seumas Tobermory Guest 30 11 2011 13 12 This video enters very dangerous territory No it doesnt It show by satire the nature of a lot of what goes on in churches these days These places are so infected by enterntainment based worship that you could be forgive for thinking you had gone to a rock concert I ll mention it again since no one seems to have remarked on it or maybe it hit a nerve and needs to be avoided Look at this page http www highlandsoutreach org Heavily promoted on this web site There is NO MENTION whatsoever of God Jesus or the bible on that home page Striking image of a Les Paul guitar however The modern church esp in its clappy happy charismaniac form is obsessed with music usually the inane repetitive mawkish cliche drenched type and having an awesome time no doubt it is cool as well It deserves to be mocked ridiculed and shown up for the hollow experience led sham that it is It has been said before and needs saying again If you need the ways of the world to get them INTO church you ll need the ways of the world to KEEP them there Editor 30 11 2011 15 40 Just to mention that the Luis Palau event was outreach and not church These are or should be two quite different scenes But this cross over or mixture is perhaps part of the problem Church is for believers outreach events are aimed at the lost John L Guest 29 05 2014 19 21 I wasn t aware there was a distinction between church and outreach however can there be There are many many lost people in churches Seumas s comment makes much sense According to the Editor there should be a banner outside an outreach event saying something like Come in all you lost sinners and hear the gospel faithfully preached I often walk past a couple of local churches and they DO have great big banners outside in bright yellow with messages such as Repent ye and believe the Gospel Mark 1 15 Can an outreach event do better Sadly NO Editor 30 05 2014 09 30 John L you said I wasn t aware there was a distinction between church and outreach however can there be There is an extremely important distinction between the church and outreach And the failure to distinguish between these two groupings and what is done in reach of them respectively

s true children and especially the preachers are sinning against God by guilty silence I for one am waiting to hear the loud voices of the prophets and reformers sounding once more over a sluggish and drowsy church They ll pay a price for their boldness but the results will be worth it To be right with God has often meant to be in trouble with men This is such a common truth that one hesitates to mention it yet it appears to have been overlooked by the majority of Christians today Apart from God nothing matters We think that health matters that freedom matters or knowledge or art or civilization And but for one insistent word they would matter indeed That word is eternity We are in real need of a reformation that will lead to revival among the churches The man who has been taught by the Holy Spirit will be a seer rather than a scholar The difference is that the scholar sees and the seer sees through and that is a mighty difference indeed The apostles went to jail and that is not too revealing because they went against their will but when they got out of jail and could go where they would they immediately went to the praying company The choices of life not the compulsions reveal character Moral power has always accompanied definitive beliefs Great saints have always been dogmatic We need right now a return to a gentle dogmatism that smiles while it stands stubborn and firm on the Word of God that liveth and abideth forever The unsatisfied longings of the prophets for human understanding caused them to cry out in their complaint and even our Lord Himself suffered in the same way The man who has passed on into the divine Presence in actual inner experience will not find many who understand him I believe that the imperative need of the day is not simply revival but a radical reformation that will go to the root of our moral and spiritual maladies and deal with causes rather than with consequences with the disease rather than with symptoms When the children of God accept the world s values it is time some Christians spoke up Babylon may have her gods her own way of life and moral standards It is when Israel begins to adopt them that the prophet of God becomes responsible to rise and cry out against them Truth consists not merely in correct doctrine but in correct doctrine to which is added the inward enlightenment of the Holy Spirit John the Baptist said A man can receive nothing except it be given him from heaven John 3 27 He was not referring to men s gifts He was speaking of spiritual truth The radical element in testimony and life that once made Christians hated by the world is missing from present day evangelicalism It is useless for large companies of believers to spend long hours begging God to

fine balance between God s mercy and judgement In Old Testament times the psalmist summed up the prevailing attitude in Psalm 2 Why do the nations rage And the people plot a vain thing The kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His Anointed saying Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us Yet regarding man s rebellion we go on to read He who sits in the heavens shall laugh The Lord shall hold them in derision Then He shall speak to them in His wrath And distress them in His deep displeasure And of God s purposes through Jesus Christ You shall break them with a rod of iron You shall dash them to pieces like a potter s vessel Now therefore be wise O kings Be instructed you judges of the earth Serve the Lord with fear And rejoice with trembling Kiss the Son lest He be angry And you perish in the way When His wrath is kindled but a little Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him Implicit in their question to Jesus regarding those who died under the falling masonry at Siloam is the disciples thought that the victims were suffering judgement because of their behaviour but Jesus turned their question back on those around him Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem I tell you no but unless you repent you will all likewise perish Luke 13 5 The finger of blame is being pointed in many different directions but Jesus points it back to ourselves The apostle Paul wrote In the past God overlooked such ignorance but now he commands all people everywhere to repent For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead Acts 17 30 31 The response then Some scoffed othes responded positively When they heard about the resurrection of the dead some of them sneered but others said We want to hear you again on this subject Acts 17 32 What will our response be today The Editor 14 04 2014 Feedback David Wilkerson ministry Guest 26 02 2014 15 09 PREACHING REPENTANCE by David Wilkerson What was the first message Jesus delivered after He emerged from the temptation in the wilderness Scripture says From that time Jesus began to preach and to say Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand Matthew 4 17 Jesus called people to repent before He even called them to believe Mark writes Jesus came into Galilee preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God and saying The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand repent ye and believe the
