  • Christians Together : Sunday ban under review
by quoting verses out of context Christian Sabbath 09 03 2006 or speculating The Ten Commandments 02 03 2006 can they try and fail to justify why they ignore biblical commands There is absolutely nothing in the 4th commandment that has to do with Sunday There is nowhere in the Bible where Sunday is called a Sabbath Footnote An article appeared in the Press and Journal in November 2002 which commented on the place of Sunday in the Christian church YESTERDAY Aberdeen hosted the ninth conference of the European Pineal and Biological Rhythms Society And the study of bio rhythms and body clocks is fascinating profoundly influencing as they do the functions of life and our world s natural order They set sleep patterns produce jet lag and underlie the astounding navigational precision of migrating birds But our cycles and modes of life are also influenced by and embedded in our respective cultures and belief systems And unsurprisingly Loganair s plans to run Sunday services to the Isle of Lewis have caused a stir Such a move in these parts on that special day is a big domino If it falls the Hebrides will most likely succumb as other places have to the commercial pressures and social changes that are turning us into a non stop world So Sunday as a day of rest is on dodgy ground But not just for secular reasons The Fourth Commandment says Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy However the commandment was given to the Jews and it related to the 24 hour period ending at sunset on Saturday The move to a Sunday rest day occurred gradually over the early centuries of Christendom and for a variety of non biblical reasons The first day of the week worship meetings of the early disciples were on Saturday after dark before work the following Sunday morning And regarding the term the Lord s Day which occurs only once in the Bible there are no grounds for interpreting this expression to mean Sunday But the Roman authorities outlawed these Saturday gatherings Later influences included the gradual change in the overall ethnicity of the church from being mainly Jewish to predominantly Gentile Then the Emperor Constantine amalgamated his new found Christianity with pagan worship centred on the Venerable Day of the Sun Subsequently the Council of Laodicea prohibited Sabbath Saturday rest in 363AD Yet for hundreds of years Scotland and its Celtic Church planted by Columba resisted this change even up to the 11th century when Scotland came under the Catholic influence of Saint Margaret King Malcolm III s second wife Of that period T Ratcliffe Barnett wrote The Scots had perhaps kept up the traditional usage of the ancient Irish Church which observed Saturday instead of Sunday as a day of rest Moreover Martin Luther and the early Reformers refused to regard Sunday as the Christian fulfillment of the Jewish Sabbath So even though Scotland enacted Sunday legislation in 1579 the battle to preserve

  • Christians Together : Prayer request for the McTaggarts.
Station where the Lord spoke to her through Psalm 116 That was the very Psalm being considered at the prayer meeting in Barvas that same night where those gathered were praying for Susan and the family I love the LORD because he hath heard my voice and my supplications Because he hath inclined his ear unto me therefore will I call upon him as long as I live The sorrows of death compassed me and the pains of hell gat hold upon me I found trouble and sorrow Then called I upon the name of the LORD O LORD I beseech thee deliver my soul Gracious is the LORD and righteous yea our God is merciful The LORD preserveth the simple I was brought low and he helped me Return unto thy rest O my soul for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee For thou hast delivered my soul from death mine eyes from tears and my feet from falling I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living I believed therefore have I spoken I was greatly afflicted I said in my haste All men are liars What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me I will take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the LORD I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints O LORD truly I am thy servant I am thy servant and the son of thine handmaid thou hast loosed my bonds I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving and will call upon the name of the LORD I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people In the courts of the LORD S house in the midst of thee O Jerusalem Praise ye the LORD Joe s son Mungo also spoke movingly of his father and brother and read out what Joe s grandson David had lovingly written about his uncle and best friend Daniel At the graveside in Bragar two of Joe s daughters played the bagpipes as their father s body was led to rest The centre of all that happened was that Joe and Daniel were with the Lord through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and their faith in Him In the weeks following Joe s funeral on each occasion that I went with my sons to Borve on the west side of the island we went to the shore and walked along the waterline with the desire that God would bring a measure of closure to the case and a degree of relief to the family by the sea yielding up the youngster s body so that he could be buried with his father Coming off the ferry in Ullapool as we went on holiday on Friday 22 June we heard on the radio that

us Soon He is on his knees in the aisle and he is still praying and then he falls into a trance again Just then the door opened it is now eleven o clock The door of the church opens and the local blacksmith comes back into the church and says Mr Campbell something wonderful has happened Oh we were praying that God would pour water on the thirsty and floods upon the dry ground and listen He s done it He s done it When I went to the door of the church I saw a congregation of approximately 600 people Six hundred people where had they come from What had happened I believe that that very night God swept in in Pentecostal power the power of the Holy Ghost And what happened in the early days of the apostles was happening now in the parish of Barvas Over 100 young people were at the dance in the parish hall and they weren t thinking of God or eternity God was not in all of their thoughts They were there to have a good night when suddenly the power of God fell upon the dance The music ceased and in a matter of minutes the hall was empty They fled from the hall as a man fleeing from a plague And they made for the church They are now standing outside Oh yes they saw lights in the church That was a house of God and they were going to it and they went Men and women who had gone to bed rose dressed and made for the church Nothing in the way of publicity But God took the situation in hand oh He became His own publicity agent A hunger and a thirst gripped the people 600 of them now are at the church standing outside And then the doors were opened and the congregation flocked back into the church Now the church is crowded a church to seat over 800 is now packed to capacity It is now going on towards midnight I managed to make my way through the crowd along the aisle toward the pulpit I found a young woman a teacher in the grammar school lying prostrate on the floor of the pulpit praying Oh God is there mercy for me Oh God is there mercy for me She was one of those at the dance But she is now lying on the floor of the pulpit crying to God for mercy That meeting continued until 4 o clock in the morning So we left them there and just as I was leaving the church a young man came to me and said Mr Campbell I would like you to go to the police station I said The police station What s wrong Oh he said There s nothing wrong but there must be at least 400 people gathered around the police station just now Now the sergeant there was a God fearing man He was in the meeting But people knew that this was a house that feared God And next to the police station was the cottage in which the two old women lived I believe that that had something to do with the magnet the power that drew men There was a coach load at that meeting A coach load had come over 12 miles to be there Now if anyone would ask them today why How did it happen Who arranged it They couldn t tell you But they found themselves grouping together and someone saying What about going to Barvas I don t know but I have a hunger in my heart to go there I can t explain it they couldn t explain it but God had the situation in hand This is revival dear people This is a sovereign act of God This is the moving of God s Spirit I believe in answer to the prevailing prayer of men and women who believed that God was a covenant keeping God but must be true to His covenant engagement That continued for almost 3 years Until the whole of the island was swept by the mighty power of God Feedback page 1 2 3 Mary berry Guest 20 07 2014 04 09 Come Lord Jesus with this Love to Gladewater Fiona Guest 04 08 2014 09 26 This is my prayer Oh Lord Jesus my Saviour and my Lord please anoint me to deny myself and seek Your face in such prevailing prayer as to move you to save heal and deliver the captive souls of men women and children in such a way that will demonstrate Who You Are in these darkening times prior to Your return Oh Lord that Your answer will break the hold of the form of religion but denying the power of it within the companies of Your people Amen Skeptic Guest 05 08 2014 21 50 This is a very interesting and deep subject Revival Can it happen or indeed has it ever happened From my research I have learnt that Duncan Campbell like Martin LLoyd Jones believed in the baptism of the Holy Spirit as an experience subsequent to conversion I cannot accept this as such would be contrary to very plain Bible teaching I cannot therefore understand why otherwise very sound men raised in the Reformed Faith would depart into the realms of unbiblical and extremely dangerous experiential theology Maybe some erudite believers on this forum may shed some light on this From my limited research into this phenomena I may add that it is very difficult well nigh impossible to confirm if what was reported to have happened on that island was a move of God John Miller 07 08 2014 14 32 Skeptic I agree with you Scripture teaches very plainly that we are sealed with the spirit when we believed I do believe that if a believer is being used of God for some specific purpose
